Victorinox MRI GQ 1604
on: August 31, 2013, 08:08:45 PM
Hi,

this is my first post here, I collect military aircrew equipment and recently picked up this unused RAF issue MRI GQ 1604 Victorinox (Hunter).
I'm trying to get as much information on them as I can..... there were probably not many of these issued because I can only find about four photos of them on the net and no information.

I have no specific date as to their introduction, but I believe that the 27C/7018504 began being included in RAF ejection seat survival kits by the GQ Parachute Company around the time of the introduction of the Eurofighter Typhoon in the early 2000s (maybe these are also included in the kits of german, italian and spanish Typhoons).

If anyone knows more can you please add to this thread, thanks in advance for your help!

cheers,

-John :tu:

See: SOSAK Article: Victorinox RAF Hunter, June 2008.

The link to this article is broken, and the Content does not seem to be on the new site at:
http://www.swissarmyknights.com/articles/2008

Maybe the date of the article was wrong, or that one has not yet been linked.  Someone might be able to dig up that article.

Thanks ICan,

the second link was interesting, so PSPs are for all aircrew not just those that use ejection seats.

My knife is still on the way from my friend, I'll have a closer look when it arrives, is there a way to date these? My alloy Victorinox soldiers knife has 84 on the blade and my very old Wenger (from a swiss friend) has 48.

Cheers,

-John :tu:

Hi Gadget,

Welcome to the forum!

Victorinox has done knives for over a dozen militaries around the world (shown is a OH Trekker for the Irish Army). Not sure about specific air force models, though I believe there were ones done for the German Luftwaffe and the Nigerian AF. Good hunting.

Thanks for the response guys, and the welcome,

Can someone explain the comment by duder in the RAF Hunter thread: "Swissmade" stamp of the newer one is used since 2005", mine has 'Swiss Made',  is Duder's "Swissmade" a typo?

I'm wondering how common are these knives and if found, what sort of prices they command.

cheers,

-John :tu:

Hi,

you are right, I meant "Swiss Made".

These knives are not so easy to find and the ones I saw in the past were sold for 2 or 3 times the price of a regular model.

Did some more digging. The Luftwaffe was a Trekker with OD handles and printed wings. The Nigerians had a modified Champion with pruner blade; red handles for the army and blue for the air force. There's also a translucent blue Climber done for the Swiss Air Force, though I'm not sure if it's official issue.

Would anyone know if the Vx MRI GQ 1604 has the broad arrow (aka crow's foot or pheon) on it anywhere?  It's the mark of Crown property and appears on British military watches and other kit.

Thanks!  I probably wouldn't be able to resist finding one of these if the pheon was present.  :)
