Well I guess I'm about to find out how secure the process is as I've just taken the plunge on this one! I don't really mind being the forum guinea pig...
I've been after one of these for some time, have seen quite a few on Fleabay but none that were willing/able to post to the UK.
Anyway, we shall see how I get on with buying blind off Gumtree...

There are no safeguards with Gumtree, so if you pay via paypal or bank deposit, and the seller does not post the item, you going to struggle to get your money back, its best to meet face to face with the seller.

Ah, now you tell me. Paid by PayPal pretty much on trust so I may have made a (nother) costly mistake. Did think of picking up in person, but the seller ain't exactly local and my fuel cost would be about the same as the tool itself.
Just gotta cross my fingers now, I s'pose.

I buy off Gumtree all the time - had no problems so far. But I always insist that they agree to send via recorded delivery that way I'm pretty certain PayPal would have to refund.

As for the B\O PST, saw that and would have snatched it were it not for the fact that I bought the exact same item the previous week for £40 inc' recorded delivery. Odd that 2 should come up??

Keep us all updated
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I appear to have bought it too:-\

I'm a little worried now, as I bought it about 6pm last night.

Hopefully we've not both been scammed: (

I think that unless the seller can provide PayPal with proof of delivery then in the event of a dispute PayPal will refund the money to the buyer (ie the transaction is loaded in favour of the buyer, but of course if the seller doesn't have any money in their PP a/c then PP can't refund anything).

I tend to pay extra for tracking and insurance on valuable/rare items, but not on ordinary stuff.

Now then Mike, this is a little unsettling isn't it. I very much doubt the bloke had two of them exactly the same for sale, so one of us at least will end up disappointed, although I do get the feeling we might both be left out of pocket. Have you had any email contact at all from the seller?

Only through Gumtree :-\

I did pay via PayPal, and he emailed me stating that he posted it this morning first class. If it turns up I'll let you know mate.

I've never used Gumtree before so I just messaged him asking if it was still available and offered to pay via PayPal. Hopefully its genuine as that money came out of my redundancy :-[

I think we've both been done then, as I had the same message from the seller, ie "posted this morning and should be with you tomorrow". It's not totally out of the question that he might have had two, just seems unlikely. We shall see, eh?

Hope you get the parcel, I'll feel a tad guilty for posting if you get burnt, even though we all know its the kirkmeister's fault deep down!  If you stated paying for goods or services in PayPal, you can almost guarantee getting your money back, happened to me once (off Gumtree ).  Got the funds returned by PayPal, and have continued buying from gumtree and similar sites in confidence. :tu: need a fingers crossed emoticon!
