Amphibious bicycle/kayak hybrid!
on: September 06, 2013, 10:50:53 PM
Finally, something Mike and I can agree on!

http://www.paddling.net/articles/The-Amphibious-Kayak.html

Pretty cool!  I like how he's made it a seamless transition from bike mode to kayak mode, although I have to say that if you tried to paddle this thing in a traditional way you'd probably curse the drag coming off the wheels!

The suction of pulling something that large out of the water coupled with going up a ramp?  Yeah, I can imagine that's a fair bit of energy!

I suppose you'd ruin its green credentials by winching it out with your Jeep :P

Love the idea. It needs a little upgrade in either a small electric or gas motor. Maybe something seen on those pedal assist electric bikes where it kicks in when it senses inclines etc.
A little Leatherman information.

Best make sure its waterproof :D

Joking aside the technology's there to do that now, albeit there being a weight penalty!

Panasonic do a lovely crank motor that's got well over ten years of proven reliability :) A better, if less green option would be a clip on cyclemotor :) The D Type engine is still being made in China, and before that it's been propelling Russians about reliably since the 1930s :)

Wow, and I thought I was lazy because I only want to be active while sitting down!  If you are going to add a motor you might as well go the distance and just gen an amphicar!

I'm thinking when I get a kayak I'll invent some sort of wheels that sit on top at one end and fold down when you need to move it across land (holding the other end).

I have a set of wheels like these and they work quite well.
