This thread is cool. I liked as it expressed the way we all think. Do what we do, how we do, when we do and so forth. I know that Google has said blah blah this and blah blah that, but isn't this freedom what's makes MTO , MTO? So by killing this thread, sorry, it has killed what made this forum great :(. Freedom. Sad as it may be or may seem, it has also killed it for me :(  It seems there is more going on than I let on or be seen, but there are even more things I see here that has changed, and not to the better IMO. But I guess my opinion, and others doesn't matter, as seen here in this thread. I guess "bigger brother" has won over MTO. Sorry to see this happen, especially here.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I believe that couldn't be any further from the truth.  While I do get what you are saying Steve, we (and Grant) have to look at the bigger picture, and do what is best for the forum.

Sure no one wants to let "Big Brother" to dictate what we can or can not do or post here, but is keeping a Women thread on a Multitool website and losing the income from Google really worth it?  Sure we could fight the system, but what if we lose?  Is it fair to expect Grant to foot the extra money that would be lost?  Or expect us members to pay for it?

While I (and I'm sure others) would like to say to Google to shove it, I'd rather be able to fire up my browser, point it here, and be able to still see this site in all it's glory that makes it great.

That is all.

Ok ok, I know this is going to sound bad but I gotta go in defense to grant here. As much as I liked the subject and would like it to come back, but for someone looking into a forum about multitools shouldn't expect a women subject? Don't get me wrong, there's other subjects on here that you wouldn't expect, but there also not rated  "R" and allowing members on as young as 13, I'm sure there's members on here that wouldn't want there own kids looking at such, especially there mothers, even though my kids seen worse through there own mother. Anyway, that's my two cents.. JR

Steve and Terry, what changed that makes you feel this way? And I assure you, all your opinions matter. That's why we have threads a few times a year to ask you what you'd like added or changed to MTO to make you enjoy this place more. Even one of the giveaways in the Charter section during this years birthday celebration was themed that way.

We only have a few rules here, and even those can be bent slightly ;)

No politics or religion, no dealers or advertising without an agreement with Grant first and keeping it family friendly.

Even Captain Spaulding who started the Women thread asked in his OP if it was OK to start the thread.

Quote from: captain spaulding
We all like eye candy (well I do)  :D so if this is out of line in any way Def, Admin, or Mods please let me know so I can start the thread or leave it to rest.

And it was doing great for the most part. The problem google has with it is that quite a few pics there are linked from porn sites, 18+ sites and similar which is against their adsense policy. So we would have to go through 1875 replies some of which have even a dozen pics and backtrack every picture to it's original source, check if it's a porn site and delete if that's the case. :ahhh We're searching for a suitable solution and there's a good chance the thread could return in the near future though.

Please let us know what you dislike or in what way MTO changed that makes you think this isn't as nice of a place as it used to be. :salute:

ill say it as simply as I can..............  I came for the tools and found SAKs as a side bonus.  if I want racy pictures while im ONLINE viewing tools I can just as easily open a separate page and look at all the videos/pictures/live chat I want.

there are times when we really need to pick our battles and this is not one IMO worth it.  Grant has im sure enough to deal with keeping this site alive and it would be a total buzz kill for the sake of racy pictures that he had to be burdened financially.  its really ZERO big deal to me as I can see all the lady pics till kingdom come anytime I want.  I cant however see all the awesome collection you all post if this site goes down and that's I where I personally have an issue.  TNA I can get all day long but pictures of Chakos and others collections I cannot.

It's just if one thing changes due to some company saids it has then shortly there after this link goes and that link goes. The first time "the owner" agrees to stop, the other company sees an opportunity to continue. No it's not tools, multis, or saks but it is, was, part of the forum. Now that's gone and I'm certain if a link pisses off google enough, then they will start enforcing, or trying to, the rest.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Honestly the women thread was very close to being locked a few times before google ever came. And you deleted most of the pics you posted there yourself so why does it bother you that it's gone?

And you said "other" things have changed and now talk about links going. Are you sure you're posting your thoughts on the right forum and not some other forum that recently forbid any links whatsoever? :pok:

Sorry Steve, but your argument seems pretty thin to me.  Is Google capable of trying to throw it's weight around?  Yes, perhaps.  Are we incapable of drawing a line as to what requests we are going to kowtow too?  I don't think so, and I feel you are doing us a disservice suggesting otherwise.

As Nikola says; the Woman thread was very often on the border of what we found acceptable anyway, so it was really no hardship to give it up IMO.

I did not remove any links. Photobucket did. And yes first it was google, then whoever. Once you say yes we will conform, then there's no going back. Stick to your guns and don't change. That's just the way I am. It can be locked or not, it's not just because it's the women thread, it's the point of the matter, and others agree, I just said it first!

Seems like a lot of drama for one thread.  If google didn't like my random thoughts thread, it'd be gone in  seconds and not more than a thought or 2 given about it.  I think the titillating nature of the women thread may give this issue more "legs" than it would otherwise have.

Personally I'd have more issue with Photobucket than with Google.  Google didn't delete the thread, but Photobucket deleted your pictures.

The problem here is not that Google told us to pull down the thread and we turned submissive immediately, it's the fact that we are trying to maintain a family friendly forum, and our ad campaigns are supposedly reflected on that. Google gets paid by advertisers to put their ads in certain target markets, some of these advertisers are Family Friendly as well, and to don't wish to be associated with questionable/semi pornographic materials. I think we can all appreciate that.

And as many others have already stated, it's easy enough to open a new window and browse other topics.

Google burnt us on our freedoms and I'm not at all happy about that but at least we're all still able to talk about the main point of the site: multitools, SAKs, knives and all kinds of gear  :tu:

Well the only thing I don't understand is if it's google saying that it's not rated as a family level, then what about there selves? I don't have my comp set to a X rated level, and my kids use the comp, and the search on Google, what's the diff  if the pic comes up on the forum or there search page? If anything at least if they were to find it on here we've had adults give it a rating that were comfortable with, unlike searching google where your going to get naked pics by looking up simple things such as "sand" or "beach" idk just a hunch. Steve,
You mistakenly view this as "Google didn't like it, so they capitulated"  In actuality, the Women Thread, comes up over and over in the Admin/moderator workload from members MOSTLY and we worked to find ways to not do anymore than necessary.  Google was just another nail in the coffin.

And as many others have already stated, it's easy enough to open a new window and browse other topics.

I must add, that is what I was thinking too  :tu:

I can't stand Google, and make no secret about that. I love this place and make no secret about that either. Whilever Google are helping to keep the lights on here, I'll tolerate them a little, and I don't think the stipulations they are putting in place are out of order (other than their incessant snooping which is why I hate them in the first place)

If someone is going to pay for advertising space, they need to know that advertising space is appropriate to their product. Us having embedded images (albeit mostly clean ones) from "adult sites" kind of tarred our image and meant that someone didn't want to advertise here. We need the revenue, we drop the links. I dare say many (not all  ;) ) of the photo's wouldn't have been a problem if they were hosted (linked from) a different site. The staff here have my full backing in their decision  :salute: as if it was my ship I'd have done the same. The cash comes from us selling our advertising space and if our "customers" don't like where the posters are going, they'll take 'em somewhere else.

I think the staff here played their cards right, although Google haven't done anything to redeem themselves here in my eyes - I still think they're evil parasitic little turds - but right now they are at least relieving the financial burden for Grant and all us members that contribute in time and/or money

I'd like to address a few things here if I may.  This is meant to be informational, not confrontational, so please don't take any offense to anything below- it is not aimed at anyone, nor is it meant to somehow put myself or the Mods above anyone else.

1.  I personally paid for this site out of pocket for over five years.  It's a good site with an exceptional community made up by exceptional members.  Google, Yahoo, Facebook, The Ghost of Steve Jobs, Microsoft etc are powerless to take away what we have built here.  However, the site grew and I could no longer afford to keep it running out of pocket, so it was find a solution or close the site.  We found AdSense to be the best solution.  We tried many others, but they just didn't work out.

2.  AdSense is owned by Google, but are just a department of.  That is why the search results you find on Google are as bad or worse than anything you found in our ads.  Google is all about information trading while AdSense represents the wants and needs of advertisers.  While I don't want to spill any numbers (finances are always a dirty subject) I will say that AdSense pays for more of this site than members do, and I am ok with that because I have never really liked the idea of shaking members down for cash.  People should be able to enjoy this site without thinking that someone is harassing them to pay for the privilege.

3.  When we signed up with AdSense (and I know I did not consult with the membership about it) we agreed to a standard of conduct- in fact, we defined our standard of conduct and for the most part we adhered to it.  They aren't so much demanding that we change things so much as they simply reminded us that we claimed to be a certain way, and numerous porn links seemed contrary to what we'd told them.

As for members that may think we are submitting to the will of our Google Overlords, I have to say that I believe this to be a gross exaggeration, and that I do not believe that the loss of a few titty shots to be a huge detriment to the forum or it's ideals.  The fact that you are still free to post your disagreement and displeasure and not get banned, deleted and made fun of shows that we are still us, and as long as I'm at the helm, that will never change.  NEVER.  That, at least to me, is what this site is, not some photos of a  Hollywood boob job.

But, that's my thoughts on it.  If that's all that mattered then it would have just been done, dissenters would have been silenced and we would have moved on.  Instead, we are here, discussing it and letting members have their say.  No one is being censored, edited, banned or deleted for their opinions, nor will they ever be.
