Leatherman doesn't need to make a new Surge. The old one is perfectly fine.

I'd much rather have the replaceable wire cutters on the new version instead of the non-replaceable ones on the old version.

Neither do I, but if I needed to cut, say, a nail, I'd rather not risk ruining the cutters on a tool where you can't replace them.

Leatherman, eBay...
I've never bought replacement cutters, so I'm not sure where the best place would be. I'm sure someone here with a MUT or ST300 will chime in.

I don't think I've ever had to cut a nail, and even if I did a multitool would not be my choice to do it with. I know folks have done this with Swisstools and Charges and other items, but it always perturbs me a little as to me it's tool abuse :-\ To me there's brutal tools like FUBARs, lump bashers (sledge hammers), cold chisels and the like .... and then there's tools which need respect and discretion like knives, chisels, screwdrivers and multitools ...  I see these "torture tests" being done, and it's like seeing someone using a micrometer as a G cramp  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Just personal opinion, and by no means a judgement of others ...  :)

I've used the cutters to cut nails a number of times, but mostly on smaller nails. For instance if I need a U shaped nail but only have a straight one. I cut the head off and bend to U shape.

Haha, yeah I wouldn't try to cut a 6" spike, but I did have to cut the head off of some smaller nails before and file them down.

Sure, I could have grabbed some actual snips, but that's why I carry an MT. I wouldn't try to cut something that I thought would really damage the tool unless it was in a situation where I had no other choice.

I do a lot of tig welding so I use an MT to cut stainless filler rod. The cutters on my old wave are looking pretty bad so I'm just patiently waiting for the new surge.

Heck, I don't use my multitools that much, but that hasn't stopped me from buying about 40 of them.

I'll be buying the new Surge, irrespective of the fact that I don't think I have ever used my 2 existing Surges.  I recognize that its a mental illness, and I'm fine with that.

But its nice to see the new cutters on the Surge, in the unlikely event that I actually use the new Surge, and in the unlikely event that when I use it I will be using the cutters, and in the unlikely event that if I use the cutters I jack them up and want to replace them.

I thought I heard that they removed the mini screwdriver tool.  Is that so and if so, what did they replace it with?

Just curious!! :D

It only appears as an "Also check out..." at the bottom of the screen. I got it on the bottom of the ST300 page. But if you click on it, it leads to a 404 page. Must be a work in progress thing. So any day now. :D

I see it, thanks.  It doesn't show the mini driver.  Maybe space was needed for the larger plier head.

The mini bit driver got replaced with the medium/small flathead. They said at the Shot Show this year they had lots of warranty claims for people breaking them.

Is it just me or does it look like the scissors on the new Surge no longer have the plastic thumb tab? It almost looks like machined jimping on the steel.

I thought that was the ridged spine on the serrated blade that you can see till I looked closer, and it does indeed look like they've jimped the steel  :tu: I wonder how much the plain driver instead of the mini bit driver, and the modified scissor thumb pad has offset costs to cover the pliers head change? Although I suppose if the head is identical to the one in the ST300 it will be cutting down their inventory and maybe helping them negotiate better prices on the new style heads from their suppliers

Also ... I did wonder if moving towards the modified saw blade coupler means they only have to supply the diamond file (or an off the shelf saw blade), as they won't need to go to the trouble of producing a non-standard saw blade now. It'll be interesting to see what's supplied in the packs  ;)

This is now all looking like a very cunning cost cutting exercise to me - and to be quite honest I don't blame them in the slightest  :tu: Now if only they'd reduce the costs and refine the tools on the Juice line  :P

They should make a bit to replace the mini screwdriver that is no longer available.  One that fits the standard size and just tapers to the size of the existing mini driver. :D

Whilst I 'patiently' [not] await this new Surge release, I have to say that I am going to miss the eyeglass screwdriver big time.  The thinking right now in my tiny head is that the new will have to be modded to accomodate the smaller driver...then 'old' Surge will get the dedicated 'whichever' driver and go in the car.

Speaking of not patiently waiting...me was thinking 'ol LM was waiting for the "First Day of Sukkot" I see on my calendar - or the first September full moon for the release.  Evidently not!

Trying hard here not to be a complete d-bag, but after waiting VERY patiently for FOUR long months for the Raptor [French pronounciation] to be released...I can't help but wonder [with all the non-starting teases] if LM is seeing how far they can go without alienating a rather dedicated base of customers.  Cuz while I realize a watched pot never boils and all that horse patooey...they're starting to get under my skin with this.

HOWEVER, I refuse - REFUSE to have a total psychotic break and now return you to your regularly scheduled programming... ;)

Anyway [ahem], still looking forward to actually purchasing, then using the new Surge and, in particular, the new blade exchanger hold-down.  My, how that rolls off the tongue.  Pretty soon, though, so will 'last LM tool I ever bought'.  I mean, if you're having production problems again...say that there's a delay, not 'pretty soon, pretty soon'.

Glad there's excitment for the release and I actually like the Raptor [with limited use so far], but please make the waiting stop!!!! :ahhh
...nothing in his pockets but knives and lint...
