I'm still cautiously optimistic.

I thought I read somewhere that it was supposed to come out late August or September? Or am I getting oldtimer's disease?

Leatherman likes to release things towards the end of the year for some unknown reason. I am thinking September or October if past releases are the bench mark in guessing such things.
A little Leatherman information.

Prediction:

The Leap will be a budget Juice type tool. The Wingman of the Juice line if you will.

I hope I am wrong.

I hope you're right.

A legacy style Juice that weighs 4oz or less would be awesome.

Just saw this and read through, lots of great insights from great minds! I did think of another possible market - "working ladies" (NO NOT THOSE! :o) I mean ladies in the workforce who might not be interested in an MT with a blade or work at some guv'ment job that does not allow blades BUT would be interested in a colorful handy dandy tool for fixing stuff at the office. Another "gateway drug" if you will.

I bet my wife would like one in red. She took the $3 MT I got at Target AND the Style PS that came packaged with a Wingman I found at the Home Depot. She mentions every once and a while how she used one at work (she is also a librarian).

I know this was brought up before, but not sure if the question was answered. We talked about the blade being installed in the Leap and if it was removable. I just watched a video online and the Leatherman Rep said that once the blade was installed it would be installed permanently. Just thought I would mention this.

Oh I just found the best pic I have seen of the blade so far on THIS page:
(Image removed from quote.)

That open pivot ring looks a real weakness.  Perhaps building on their Juice heritage as a previous post suggests.  Hope they are still "tweaking" the heat treatment QC.  Or the blade might self-remove.

I agree that's about the weakest blade tang I've ever seen on a mutitool relative to blade size. As such, probably a very inappropriate design for inexperienced knife users (kids). Another example that Leatherman's primary focus is a good profit rather than a good product. They'd better make A LOT of spares ready for warranty replacements, and get their legal team on standby for injury claims.

I'll stick to my original assessment that this should be called the FACEPLANT rather than the LEAP

I doubt if LM is gonna farm out there tools any time soon or if ever for that matter. They are still a good company. My new style BO Surge is top notch.

I hopez you guys are wrong about this, as I have two nephews I was getting excited about getting these for.  I don't know that EVERYTHING LM is making is complete smurf.  However, at a bare min, we all know a release date of AUG/SEPT = OCT/NOV.  OK...April??

However, I have no illusions about product...more of a 'wait and see' attitude.  I've read here about a number of problems people are having with newer produced tools.  Having said that, I've learned to relax a bit on the release date side of things.  Well, somewhat.   :D

I sincerely hope LM is not going down the pipes; I would hope [without holding my breath] that they've still got some innovative, quality items to produce...before they're...run into the ground from short sightedness & broke from trying to keep up with warranty repair & replacement.  Eh, I'd prefer the former to the latter.

I just remember getting my first knife [oddly, from a not-very-outdoorsy-type family, etc.] at about age 9 also - and it was a big deal.  A coming of age sort of responsibility that you always remember.  It would really suck if I give them  a gift like that and the blade falls out or someone gets injured!

Remember this is to get the kids involved into Multitool carry and use.  these children are not going to carve a 2x4 with this blade ( maybe cut a piece of string or an apple .. Such as what children will do )  so I keep an open mind about its use it would be something great for a young one to have and carry just like DAD !!!!

I would second that; I'm having a great time with my Surge.  Still haven't had the chance to put it through the motions completely, but I've definitely used every tool on there, and - no problem.  The belt clip issue - OK, but if that's it - that's OK...

Usually its when companies go public and succumb to shareholder pressure to drive up profits that quality starts to nose dive.  As far as I know Leatherman is still a privately held company though?

Maybe the recent experiments into one piece and specialty tools have cost money.  They need to drop the number of products they have and refocus.

You'd never guess by the way they run the business that there was just 1 man at the helm.

They need to quit making surfboard tools and shortpricked juices and instill some QC into their top sellers.

Ive always liked the way benchmade does it with the gold, blue and black class.  Then you can have different price points for obviously budget type tools like the wingman, and a higher end group that costs more and has top notch fit and finish.

I'm sure there's enough kids out there who'll try and carve their name in a tree or bench with this, or cut something inappropriate with it, or stab it into a chunk of wood or whatever. Some kids may be little cherubs who would use a knife blade nicely as mommy or daddy showed them, but the majority will intend to "have fun" with it I reckon.

I hope the heat treatment is more towards flexibility than toward brittle hardness.
I'd say the worst outcome would be a blade breaking into splinters, followed by the blade coming loose.

But as long as noone tests a LEAP I have no measure how durable the blade (and the blade holding mechanism) will be.

All this aside, I don't like the design and will never buy one (but that is only my personal opinion)

I would bet that this is the case.  Boyz will be boyz, will be boyz, yoy yoyz after all, no?   ::)

I'd like to think that LM have thunk this one out - especially as it's designed specifically for kids.  However, stranger things have happened...

I will buy this . This is better than those one piece tools. I might not install the blade tho as I always have 3 knives on me all the time

Actually it would be cool if you could install something different, for a bladeless MT. Maybe a Metal saw?
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

if you take the case where you're cutting something with that blade and putting pressure down on the handle (tool) and up on the blade, it will be pivoting around the place where the top of the blade meets the blade stop. If you look at the forces on that it doesn't look great, and it some scenarios you could see putting in a direction that would tend to pull the back of the blade down and away from the pivot.

I think?

I wont buy one for my kids as I still find the saw blade more dangerous than a blunt knife blade, but I would like to buy to examine, test, review and take apart.
