You're kidding right?
on: September 20, 2013, 06:46:31 AM
So, today I find out my paycheck is like 18 hours short, and get to deal with that. Fun times, but whatever. Then all of a sudden this evening my aquarium canister filter decides it's a good time to die. So I got to spend my evening setting up a new temporary 10 gallon tank, and transporting the fish over, until I can get my hands on a new filter for the 55. Which of course costs almost the same amount as my check was short

Thankfully the 55 is seriously overkill for what was in there ATM and they can easily live happily in the 10 gallon pretty much indefinitely, but still. Now i'ts almost midnight, I work in the morning, my bedroom is filled with fish tank paraphernalia, I can't take a shower because I used every towel in the house to clean up my mess, and I smell like a trout.

It's Friday. It's guaranteed to be better. Because I'm going to make it that way.  :tu: I'm going to go to work, then sit there and relax all day accomplishing basically nothing. Because screw it, it's Friday  Then I'm going to finish setting up the new mini-aquarium and figure out what to do with that debacle. I'm making it into an opportunity to do something completely new and different in there. Then relax as hard as I can all weekend because I have nothing else to do  :D

Watch the truck die on the way to work...lol

OMG. So I go to the bathroom. Pick up the canister of aquarium charcoal. The lid flies off and I spray a couple lbs of charcoal pellets and dust all over the ENTIRE bathroom  ::). Oh, and I'm supposed to be at work already, but haven't even gotten my shoes on yet. Is it too late to go back to bed?

Oh. It gets so much better. I leave for work and one of the cats takes off after a squirrel. Of course it's raining. So I go chasing the cat down and carry him home. In the rain. Finally go to leave "oh, good, out of gas", So I putter to the gas station, and a sleep addled brain combined with a lifetime of driving turbocharged sports cars autopilots premium gas into the truck. Which is fine aside from the unnecessary cost. I'm hungry, stop at MacDonald's. Order 3 times before they realize they need to turn on their end of the mic  ::) Get to work half an hour late, and find I'm pretty much the only person in the company who bothered to show up. I really should have just stayed in bed lol.

Right now its a pleco, some kind of small catfish I inherited, and 4 platys. Well 3, just found one didnt make the re-home. I had a Jack Dempsey, a few other Africans, and some Clown Loaches, but the absolute crap water in this town killed them all off when I moved. The Clown Loaches lasted the longest until a few weeks ago when I didn't realize they had turned the water into like 50% chlorine before I did a water change. I was SMURFED when that happened. It's really hard to keep the water at all stable when the city water supply swings massively in quality week to week. I'm working on a plan to plant the 55 and restock with less sensitive easier fish.

A couple weeks ago I had like 15 Platys. Most of them have slowly disappeared without a trace. The catfish has gained a lot of weight....

Convict cichlids are great looking, very hardy but will kill anything in its path besides its best friend aka opposite sex when paired up.

as for water quality try some of this....7ish bucks at petco/petsmart

I swear by the stuff...one container has enough for 500 gallons of water. Sets ph to 7 which is on par with most fishes needs ...besides African cichlids ..they need up to 8 or 9 and hard water. Most common cichlids need 7 and under acidic water.

also another shameless product plug....hikari food.

my fish came from f2 fry in 2002 or 3 when I lived up in plano/dallas/McKinney --- still going strong today.

I actually do use that neutral regulator every water change. After some thought I decided my 55 is going to be fully planted. Not sure what creatures I want to go with yet, but Im going to aim more towards terrarium than aquarium. It'll be a fun new project.

I picked up some new substrate today. Tomorrow Im going to drain and clean out the tank and start getting it set up/planned out. Then I'll start shopping around for a few plants to start out with, get things established a bit.
