A little Steady love
on: September 29, 2013, 01:54:18 PM
I was in St Augustine and spotted a Gerber Steady in a knife shop. It was probably twice the price of one on Ebay, but I was in holiday mood and made a bit of an impulse buy. It's been reviewed before, but I thought it deserved a wee mention.

I found it a little plasticky, being used to carrying heavier tools, and the pliers are quite tiny, but that's not what it's about. As a camera steady for my iphone it worked a treat and got a lot of use over my holiday with some light use of the knife blade, driver and pliers around the house we were staying in. I'm not wholly sure why there is a full size and a little one inch knife blade.

The green parts on tool are silicone grips that stopped it sliding around nicely.

Great for using the self timer on my other camera too...

My lovely wife is of course not surprised I'm taking a photo of the thing that is taking a photo of us.

I'll keep this one with the suitcases and have it as an EDC when on vacation. I doubt there will ever be a newer version, but if there was it could be a lot slimmer with a few more metal parts, the mobile phone sucker could be integrated (it fits in the pouch, but not very securely and adds to the bulk) and some adjustment on the ball and socket would allow it to take heavier cameras and adjust out any wear.

Can I actually see your wife rolling her eyes? :D

Great shots mate and good to hear that you got some proper use out of the Steady.

Nice review, with some good real world tests.   :tu:

You have a very patient wife, mine (ex wife now) would have rolled her eyes and walked away before I was ready to take the picture.  And the girlfriend I had before her would have pulled her shirt up.

But I don't know what would worry me more, trusting a Gerber knife blade to hold up a camera, stabbing a non locking knife blade into a tree, or getting it out of the tree with the blade still attached to the tool.

I'll admit being very careful 'applying' it to the tree, not stabbing. It's the second wife so she knows no different from me, first one was less tolerant, and have you a number for the first girlfriend.

I'd hate to try and make a major car repair at the side of the road with a Steady, but as a light duty tool for vacations, hikes and so on I think it is an excellent tool.  I'm glad that a few people are starting to believe me, even though many seemed to think it was just as waste!
