The MTA (Multitoolers Anonymous) Meeting
on: August 17, 2013, 09:18:15 AM
OK folks, gather 'round... It's time for us to talk about our addiction

I'll start...

Hey guys, I'm Sam and I have an addiction.

I found this forum a little over month ago, and ever since I have had this craving for more multitools, especially Leathermans and SAKs. It's going to cost me a fortune, but hey, it's all fun, right?

When I got here, I was just curious, I was thinking: "I would never get to collecting SAKs, no sirree"... Well, we all know how well that goes

Then i got psyched about SAK modding, unfortunately that has to wait til I have access to proper tools...

And don't even get me started about paracord  :ahhh

Thank you.

Well done Sam, the first step is admitting you have a problem. :D

On a marginally serious note, we really have had guys end up spending a LOT of their money on gear, more than they can afford.  I do always think having a reasonable monthly budget is the way to go, depending on your circumstances that might mean you can buy lots every month, or it might mean you have to save for several months for a single item.  It's all good as far as I am concerned. :)

The other thing I like to do is bargain hunt.  For example; I quite like the idea of getting a Charge Al, but there is no way I am going to buy one at full UK price, so I keep an eye on Amazon, EDCsource, our trade section etc and will hold out for a great deal.

In short; have full everyone, just don't go bankrupt or spend so much that your wife want to leave you. ;)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Maybe you should have a look at the "flashlight forum", just to take your mind off multitools ...

Having no wife can be a big advantage in collecting multi-tools, as I am astounded at how much wives tend to control buying habits of the majority of members found therein.  :D

I agree, one should never exceed their spending limits. Only buy what you can afford. Family, food, and shelter are far more important things than collecting.

For me, a large part of the joy of collecting is finding the bargains.  Yes I could probably buy them all brand new off the shelf, but the real joy comes from the hunt, not just the trophy.  Finding what I want or what interests me and getting a good deal is all part of the game!

I can only acknowledge that finding the bargains is the best part about collecting.

I like all of my tools, but when I look at my Leatherman Expanse that I bought at a 50% discount, or the 3 Spirits and Swisstool that I got at a 75% discount I still get a big smile on my face  :D.

Yeah, my wife stops me from from buying MTs and insists I buy trivial things like food, electricity, petrol, clothes for my kid, stupid things like that. :D

Our budget is quite tight, yet on occasion I manage to buy some new gear (mostly Swiss products but it varies).  I would advise anyone to not exceed their budget for their collection.  Enjoy the forum but be responsible.

Is it sad that I dream of winning the lottery,  so I could go crazy on my hobby?   Most would pay bills and be investments,   but that lady 10% would be so fun!

i absolutely love getting tools at bargain basement prices.  the hunt is definitely exciting and while i recently bought off fleabay i try to go to the fleamarket regularly.  my best buys so far are a charge tti $30, wave $20, mini $5, and a 79 soldier $5.  i like to pick up extra jobs i wouldn't normally do so i can afford to get what i want when i want.  i am planning a little trip soon to a huge fleamarket to search out deals.

The Steps of MTA:

1) We admitted that we were powerless over Multitools, that our spending had become unmanageable.
2) Hey, are those 84mm scissors?  Don't have those in the collection.....
3) That price is a bit steep.  If I bring lunch to work next week though.....
4) Ah, food is overrated.  Gotta have that SAK!
5) She'll never notice anyway......  ;)

And you'll lose weight if you cut out food! Which could be good or bad depending on what you already weigh.

I have a serious multitool interest, it's not a problem as long as i weigh more than my collection.  Right?

Maybe I just need to eat more.

Once you start letting them use you, you have a real problem.  :D

Well, it's been a while since last MTA meeting...

I have used way more money on MTs than i should, but I guess that's par for the course :D

What i have coming:
LM MUT
Vic Swisschamp
Gerber MP600 DET

Luckily the SOG Powerlock EOD didn't cost me a dime, so that's good :D

I have a serious problem

Ha, my problem is that I don't have enough money to feed an addiction at this point.  When I first got interested in MTs/SAKs, I spent a good amount of money, but at the time, we could afford it.  Now it's a different story, so I have a savings account just for this purpose, and have a set amount automatically deposited from my pay.  It takes a long time to build up to afford anything I want, but it doesn't help that I'm quick to spend it as soon as it breaks $20 ::)
