HELP, I just found my straight razor ...
on: October 07, 2013, 10:07:44 PM
and it needs saving. :ahhh

I lost this thing in a move over a decade ago. I looked for it for years and couldn't find it. Now I stumbled upon it while rummaging through some boxes in the kitchen storage cabinet. No idea how it ended up there. But the years haven't been kind to it. It got some serious surface rust. Luckily no nicks to the blade though and it still has some sharpness to it.

Is it salvageable and if so, how do I go about doing it? Henry? I'd love your opinion on this. :pok:

:D

You can certainly interupt/arrest the oxidation and polish it out - maybe starting off with sparky's magic car battery charger and electolyte process - but there will probably be some residual pitting  :( Aside from a full all over regrind, it will probably be left with some scarring, which will be where any future oxidation strikes first

The edge itself will definitely come back in full working order.

Let's see, you'll need a 230mm angle grinder, full face respirator, life insurance, 1kg of bananas, 2 litres of brandy and a Princess Leia outfit ... should have it sorted in about 6 hours assuming you don't get arrested first  :tu:

I think I'll happily NOT seeing the XL leia costume.  :o

Razor looks perfectly fine, I'd be careful with steel wool/sandpaper as you may put dent in the paper thin edge. Alternatively you could probably use chemical rust remover, which can be made yourself if you have molasses in your kitchen.

It just needs clean up , probably needs to be honed , then stropped . Honing can be a bit of an art form . Check out Badger and Blade Forum .

jzmtl and Styerman have a point. Depending on how you clean it you'll need to fix the edge. I also read somewhere that for shaving the edge should be finished on at least a 2 micron stone (roughly 6000 grit in waterstones) if not an even finer one

Just try and not get blood on the camera when you take a pic of what's left of your face.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm waiting for HankSolon as I think he has some experience restoring/sharpening these things. ;)
