How do you carry a ringless SAK? (Suggestions)
on: October 08, 2013, 12:25:00 AM
My EDC SAK is one of Syph's genius creations (Pioneer with scissors & Philips driver), and has a split ring. I put a P7 suspension clip on it, and carry it in my left front pocket (I'm a lefty). It sits clipped where my dedicated folding knife would be if I were carrying one.

I've got some SAKs that don't have the split ring, and I've seen people say that they actually grind their split ring attachments off. For those of you with SAKs without the ring, where do you normally carry it? I would think to put it in my back pocket next to my wallet to keep it from turning and being uncomfortable. I have a Carver I'd like to carry on certain weekends where the wife and I go outside the city, since I'll often sit somewhere and whittle or carve wood.

I ordered one of those medium leather Vic pouched that's supposed to fit the Farmer, so maybe I could belt carry it, but I'm open to any of your ideas.

Thanks gents.

I've often wondered the same thing. And I always assumed they just carry it lose in their pockets or in a sheath. I prefer the split ring however and will not buy a SAK that is missing it. Wenger SI is good of course because it has a bail.  :tu:

Loose in the pocket or in the RB pocket parallel to the wallet. I prefer the feel in the hand of a keyringles SAK.

Loose in the right front pocket  :D Keyring attachment is for carrying other stuff such as a small pliers tool or AAA light  ;)

I use the coin or phone pockets. I have been known to sew dividers into pockets if needed.

I've never had any problems just dropping a SAK into a front pants pocket, from a Classic up to a Super Tinker.  Anything much bigger than the ST goes into a pouch on my belt.  Some of my pants have a cell phone pocket, which is too big for a smart phone but nice size for a bandanna and a SAK.

And for some tools, like the Gerber Fit, I've added a stickie clip like the one from Nebo.

During the week I carry my laptop bag with my Charge, but otherwise I prefer not to... Not unless I have my nutnfancy fanny pack....heh.

Just dropping it in a pocket is often good enough.

Probably my most used approach is to carry the SAK vertically in one of my front pants pockets next to my wallet on the side nearest my belt buckle.  The wallet has an almost uncanny tendency to hold the SAK in position.  This works well with 85/91/93 mm SAKs up to about four layers thick.

I'll also use coin, watch, or shirt pockets, although I find these best for smaller SAKs, i.e. 74 mm or less depending on the pocket, and not more than two layers thick.

Also, if you are having issues with the SAK moving around or even possibly falling out of the pocket, adding a bandanna (as 3rdpig suggests) can help keep the SAK from moving around.  And, bandannas are useful things to carry anyway...

I carry mine either in the watch pocket (ideally) or in my front right pocket wrapped in a handkerchief (not so comfy at times). I'm currently working on making some pouches for pocket carry with some cloth I salvaged from a pair of trousers. I expect carrying them in a pouch will work better than wrapping them in the handkerchief. This way the hanky will be cleaner too.

I carry all my SAKs just in the pocket (I actually remove clips and rings). Some pants have a watch pocket, that is perfect to and if its large enough you can put in your Spirit or Charge.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Thanks for all of the ideas gents, it's much appreciated. I'll likely end up putting in my back left pocket next to my wallet. I had in there last night and it didn't bother me.

After that sheath/pouch comes in, I'll see how that'll work. Couldn't hurt to try it. I just don't want to pass up a design I really like just because it doesn't have the split ring which is what I'm used to.

Southpaw, ha? :D We once did a poll and we have quite a big percentage of southpaws here. Over a third I think.

It sits very nicely next to the wallet. It will drop to the bottom when you remove your wallet but it's easy to just realign it when you put the wallet back in without taking it out of your pocket. :tu:

Indeed, another lefty here. As a hero of mine calls it, defective.  Luckily my favorite knife company Kershaw makes plenty of defective knives.  :D

So far the wallet location is working, doesn't bother me when I sit. That pouch though looks really great. I'd love one of those in black, seems like the cat's potatoes.

I carry all SAK's with a ring or not loose in my Right Front pocket. Does not bother me at all.

Just wondering how the lefties get along with the can opener? How do you use it? I know if I tried to use it (in the right direction) with my left hand I would have a hard time.

:P

watch pocket, coin pocket and fifth pocket are different names for the same pocket. The small one located above the right pocket on every pair of jeans and also on most other pants/trousers except slacks. :D

Only a few pairs of my jeans have enough space in that pocket to carry a 93mm SAK.

As for the can opener...I have no trouble with it. What exactly do you mean?

(someone please correct me if i'm wrong in any way)

The can opener is designed to be used with your right hand and in a counter clockwise motion around the can. The can opener is also placed on the same side of a SAK every time so there is no gap in between the knife and the can which would cause trouble in opening a can. I would assume a lefty would either try and go counter clockwise around the can which would work fine or go clockwise around the can causing the gap and using the wrong side of the can opener. Does that make sense? I swear there was a thread about this somewhere.

Doesn't bother me one bit.  I was a bit awkward when I first tried it, but I got the technique down quickly.  I have found the Wenger can opener a bit easier to use as a lefty than the Vic.  :tu:  As for carrying, all SAKs go in the left front pocket except 111mms.  They go next to the wallet in the back left pocket.

Is that because it is your unco hand or because it is cross body?

If you had to use a left handed opener clockwise, would you do better with your left or right hand?
