Macgyver or Inspector Gadget?
on: October 08, 2013, 05:42:11 PM
Those among us who always carry one or several multitools may have been called sometimes "Macgyver" or "Inspector Gadget". Has that happened to you already? Do you somehow identify yourself with one of those fictional characters, or any other that uses a SAK or other multitool in his/her adventures?

I cannot say that I do... I'm just the guy with the pocket knife.

I've also heard people talk about 'Batman's Utility Belt'.

Mostly, what people call me is just 'crazy'. And then ask to borrow a flashlight or something. Smurf-holes.

People I know call anyone else they see with a pocket knife or multitool a "Nhoj wanna be." So I guess I'm not labeled, everyone else is.

I have been known to call something "MacGyver'ed" after I fixed something without much on me!

Example:  "Honey, I MacGyvered that latch on the shed today that I told you about yesterday"!   :tu:

I've been called a lot of names :P but yes, Macgyver was one of it. :D What do you expect when a kid always carries a red SAK and there are Macgyver reruns on the telly. ;)

Yep...MacGyver gets thrown my way quite a bit by the unprepared legions after I accomplished some task for them that they hadn't the foresight to prepare for.

The Doctor (or Doc) was a nickname of mine many years ago, well before I got into pocket tools. Very rarely get it these days. Two nicknames that I acquired at the boatyard were Gadget and Clustersmurf  :P I have had a lot of others at various times in my life, but generally I just get called by my name .... to my face at least  ;) :D :D :D

:D  We have a contractor that I call Clustersmurf Charlie.  His brother who also comes in here often is SNAFU Steve.  Around here, the call for me and my tools is, "Hey, knifeboy!"......
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D

MacGyver is one of the kinder names. Smurfhole seems much more prevalent .

I watched MacGyver for a while, but gave up on it.  I got sick and tired of the lack of realism, with so much of what he did just being totally implausible.  It has been a while now and I've forgotten many of the things that made me thing "BS!" but one that stands out was him getting a burning pine cone and rolling it under a jeep, when it 'popped' it blew the jeep up like it was high explosives!

I would have really enjoyed the show if what Mac did was difficult but possible, rather than BS & impossible.  They gave reasons in the show why what he was doing would work, just not believable reasons.  I think that trying to justify the impossible things made it much worse for me.

Having just the right tool required because he was carrying a good SAK was one of the better aspects of the show, of course.
