Blue Mist Classic - Thing of beauty
on: October 09, 2013, 02:40:28 PM
On a whim the other day I ordered one of the 2013 limited edition Classic SDs.

I picked "Blue Mist" cos it looked ok... it's just arrived and I am blown away how pretty this thing is.

(It's my first encounter with a Classic so I am also amazed by the scale.)

The images on both sides are razor sharp, flawless, clear. I had expected fuzzy edges, misalignments, or some indication that this was a 17 euro bottom-of-the-range key chain gimmick. Basically it succeeds in looking like a beautiful piece of porcelain. No one will mistake it for a Ming Dynasty antique but it is a treasure, simply by being so pretty and so well made. (that it has some function as well is a bonus.)

I would say it is the perfect little present for a wife or daughter or someone who generally has no interest in clunky old Victorinoxes... actually I am trying to decide whether it's too dangerous for my 6 year old girl, because I am sure she will love the design. (Koi fish! And a Princess? It doesn't get better than this...)

(I must say it beggars belief that Victorinox has such pretty scales - and reserves them for its most boring knife. Slap some of these on the Ramblers and Managers they will sell like hot cakes...)

If I am not mistaken, the link above shows the (awesome) concept art, not the end result.

I know you people are most likely aware how tiny the Classic is but I put it beside my funny old Wenger 85mm just for some sense of scale. It looks better than my photos - I don't think the colour balance is quite right but I'm not gonna fuss about it.

For the record this is my entire Swiss army knife collection apart from 2 Spartans sitting unopened somewhere. (Though I have an alox Rambler and a minimalist Bantam (14 euros!) on the way.)

Oh. I also have a Swisstool Spirit which I forgot about.

"I like the yes or no classic."

I've been on the fence about that one for weeks, I just can't decide if I like it's my cup of tea... probably going to have to consult my astrologer and/or palmreader...

I love the artwork, but how durable is it?

I'd buy one, but I'm afraid in would rub off in my pocket in a month.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Do they wear out so easily?

This one probably won't be chained to bunch of keys so it should last a while.
