111mm hercules help
on: October 22, 2013, 09:48:35 PM
Thinking of modding a HERCULES to use as my daily carry.  Want to swap out for oho blade and drop the long phillips and pliers.

Does this sound doable?  I am yet to buy the knife as I wanted to make sure this could be done first.

Thanks for any help or advice.

The long phillips pairs with the scissors, the short phillips pairs with the pliers - you'd have trouble mixing them up I think. Not sure on the OHO, but you'd be wise to try another OHO 111mm frist, as the OHO blade can make it uncomfortable using the saw and file etc  :salute:

I think it'd be easier if you look at it like adding layers to a OHO 111mm SAK. Just start with the opener layer (which is much more awesome with the locking caplifter, anyway) and knife blade layer of an OHT, and stack the other layers on top of it? That's how I would try it, if I was going to...

I think the short phillips layer is thicker than the scissors layer so that would be a problem adding it underneath the scissors. You could use washers on either side of the scissors to compensate but that's not an ideal solution.

How about just using an Outrider and adding the OHO blade to it?

Ya you cant mix and match the phillips, they are different thicknesses.  The short one is thicker to pair with the pliers.

The layers are odd on the 111mm size.  The saw layer for example on a OH has the corkscrew/phillips back tool, but on a non OH it has no back tool.  The saws are also shaped differently.  The opener layers are completely different since the OH has that massive cap lifter.

On the OH trekker the blade an opener layers have to move together as the liner lock works for both layers.

So while you could move the blade and opener over to the hercules, you cant delete the blade layer on a hercules since it has the back tool.

The best option here is to add layers to a OH trekker, but it must be added between the saw and OH blade layer.  I see no barrier to that as a mod, and in fact it looks like it would make a great SAK.  I would love to put a scissor layer there.  Also Id love to reverse the liner lock to be right hand friendly.  I know it can be done, but not sure if I can reuse the same liner or have to make a new one.

Maybe the long inline will work with spacers? If the tool rest on the inline is the same it might just work
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Went ahead of myself in this project and reprofiled the blade.

Ya the tip on the OH trekker blades is blunt on all of mine.  Its annoying that they come that way.
