Which swisstool spirit would you rather have?
on: August 30, 2006, 09:50:11 AM
Which swisstool would you rather have? The swisstool spirit or the new swisstool spirit s? It would be nice to have the good old SAK spearpoint blade. But I use my scissors on my spirit alot.

I would go for the blade version as the knife can do just about what scissors can & is more useful in MHO.

I would opt for the standard version (although I will likely have at least one of each!) simply because I don't feel that the point on the blade is that necessary.  I don't often stab or poke at anything with the blades on a multi or SAK and if I need the tip to dig out a splinter or something, the scissor tips work just as well for that.

:)If I could choose I would prefer the Scissors and spearpoint blade rather than either current configuration.

Just out of curiousity, what is it in particular that you guys like/need about the spear point?

I never really thought about it before but it's just something that I'm used to carrying. I've had a SAK in my pocket since I was 17. And you just get used to it.

I thought that way too, but you know, the straight blade has really grown on me.

If the serrated blade bothers you, you can remove the serrations, or just carry another sak with you like a bantam or something one bladed like a florist. The great thing about the spirit is it's size, I work as an asst. mgr in a groc store and people don't realize I carry a tool on my side. One time a customer driving one of those electric shopping carts complained of a burr of metal that was poking him and wondered if I could do anything, I pull out the tool and filed it down real quick. it took at least a few mins for the old man to have his jaw picked up off the floor. It's great when you floor people like that.

i think i'll prefer the standard version, with the serrated blade and the scissors, since i always carry other knife anyways, if i am in the woods i surelly will have a OHT and also one of my fixed blades, in the city a soldier would be a good combo

I don't own a Swisstool Spirit (yet).  To answer the question about the usefulness of a pointed knife tip, I use the tip of my knife to puncture the tough plastic packaging on today's "blister packs" before continuing the cut with the rest of the blade.

I hate Blister packs. It's like companies want us to buy their products, and then never open them. With my spirit I use the awl to puncture the pack then the knife to cut the rest open. It may mean I have to use two tools but it works OK.

I agree, I have cut myself many times on the dang plastic. Blister packaging does keep the cost down a bit and it doesn't look like we'll ever get rid of it so.....

I wonder how folks getting their first knife manage to get it out of the blister pack?
