These tools look fantastic!
(Image removed from quote.)
That's definately welding done on purpose. You can't accidentally weld that round shape on the flat of the hammer.
For those who don't weld, the fuse metal is melted when the "-" and "+" of an electrical current is short circuited. So, the hammer must have had electricity through the negative lead running through it while the fuse metal was connected to the positive lead. (Sorry if the names arn't exactely correct, not sure of them in English)
As for the pics for the labeling, try using macro fuction (button pic looks like a flower). You're pics are focused too far when you have the camera close to the tool.

Thanks for the comments!  :)  It is looking like my Grandad pinched it from someone else then.  :D

With regards to my photography skills  :D, I struggle to get enough light on the image in macro mode and so I end up with really dark, yet really well focussed, images.

Just thought I would resurrect this thread after my recent discovery.

In the bag of tools I got from my Grandad there was also a pair of Mole grips.  These I just assumed were a cheapy set of Moles and as I had misplaced mine I lobbed them in my tool box and thought no more of it.  Well when I was looking for something else earlier today I stumbled across them and had a quick nose.  I was surprised to see that they were made in Birmingham (not China) and it turns out that these are a set of the original Mole grips that were made back in 1955 by M.K Mole and Son where the Mole grip inventor Thomas Coughtrie worked.

Now I am not too sure if these were made for years with the same trademarks on them, but they are marked with "Birmingham" and the company moved out of Birmingham in 1960 so they are possibly made prior to that (although I do doubt it).

Needless to say, they have been whipped out of the junky section of my tool box and are now enjoying a thorough cleaning.  :D
I'm back!!

That is a cool find  :tu: Pics would be nice after its had its clean up.

On an almost connected note I've been meaning to ask about this tin...

Its aluminium and I picked it up at a carboot sale for ten or twenty pence thinking it might be useful.  It wasn't until the other day whilst having a clear up that I noticed it had some writing on it.  That might seem obvious from the photo but in reality its hardly visible at all.

I wonder what it means?  What was its intended use?  My best guess is for soap :)

That looks like the "crow's foot" which would mean that it's British Army issue I think Neil,

I agree that looks like an issue stamp.

Bit of trivia; Mole grips were made in England but were preceded by Vice-Grips from the USA.  The major difference being the way you pull the release lever, pull it towards the static leg on Vice grips, push it towards the movable leg on Mole grips.  I think that's the right way round anyway.  Some of the rubbish I know.  ::)

Are there any mole grips that are still made in England?

For once the obvious answer was the correct one :D

Don't think I'd spend $6 on one (the $34 shipping was a bit scary as well) but for a few pence it makes a change to altoids tins.

Ok, after a lot of cleaning this is how far I've got (which isn't very far TBH).  It was in a real state so I am actually surprised it is even looking this good;

After cleaning, these engravings showed up.  I have no idea what they are though;

And here's a pic of it next to my favourite oldie tool (Fuse in there for scale);

The markings of the Mole grips do tend to point to it being old, but TBH, they could be 2 years old for all I know.

It is real heavy.  I must weigh it one day.  What I like is that you can see that it's been made by hand and it just so solid that it really would last a lifetime.

Great pics man :tu: I really love old tools they tell so much just by looking at them :) Wonder how much more they could tell us if they could talk though :o I have mostly old bricklaying tools but I have a few carpentry tools as well and I love how well built they are :cheers: It's a shame at some of the cheap junk they sell as high quality now :( especially when compared to some of the older versions of the same thing :ahhh
