At this moment, what are your Top 5 SAKs?
on: October 25, 2013, 04:50:08 PM
Our favorites change from time to time. What are your favorites THIS week?

For my part:

  • Victorinox Rambler - Carried in my office attire at least 4 days a week. Sometimes, I try to carry more knife, but I usually end up realizing that it isn't needed. I have a toolbox in the cabinet next to me, and Adventurer in the desk drawer, and the regular office tools. I only need a small, sharp blade and a minimal tool set to save me a few steps here and there. The Phillips is surprisingly good.
  • Victorinox Explorer - This is my usual weekend pocket carry. Great tool set. I use everything but the magnifier pretty often. It is more than is comfortable for me to pocket carry, at four layers, but it is such a good tool set that I get used to it. I tried going down to a Yeoman, but the combo tool is a poor substitute for the individual openers. It folds up nearly every time I try to use the flat head screwdriver on it.
  • Wenger EvoGrip S16, PER edition. This one also has a great tool set, and sometimes gets the nod instead of the Explorer, when I don't think I'll need a tight-spaces Phillips. I love the locking blade in a small package, the springless scissors, the thin toothpick, and the self-locking flat head screwdriver. I miss the ability sometimes to use the can opener as an inline Phillips, but I gain a heavy duty poking/scraping tool. I'm tempted to re-grind and sharpen the can opener sometimes. The nail file instead of a small blade is nice to use for those odd #1 Phillips screws I sometimes encounter in electronics.
  • Wenger Pocket Tool Chest - Great alternative to the Rambler. Adds a couple nice tools: precision flat head screwdriver and awl. It is just that bit more hand-filling that makes it feel more secure in the hand than a Rambler or Classic.
  • Victorinox Sportsman - A nice little 84 mm knife. Much thinner than the S16, but with a pretty comparable tool set. I lose the T-Phillips, but gain the Vic can opener, which does a fair impression of an inline Phillips at times. It's one of the rare medium sized Vics that has a nail file, which as above, can be either used as a #1 Phillips, or ground down a bit at the tip to be a light duty flat Phillips. I find there's more difference in the "pocket feel" than we might think from losing only 7mm of length compared to the more common 91mm size. The only criticism I can think of on this knife is that the corkscrew doesn't sit flush with the scales; it seems they used the same corkscrew as on the 91mm models. No matter, it'll be forgotten once I get the small screwdriver in there. ;)
I look forward to hearing about your current Top 5, their roles, and your detailed rationales. :)

Great topic!

Cybertool 41:  I especially like my modded CT41 with Timekeeper scales.  It's been my EDC at work lately.  It's just so handy.

Farmer:  It's a powerhouse SAK with (IMO) perfect ergonomics in hand and in pocket.

Cybertool 34 with mammoth tusk scales:  It's a work of art and generally is my "Dress SAK"

Alox Lumberjack:  It's not really a stand alone SAK but is a powerful complement to my farm EDC pliers based MT

Ranger 90:  Great tool.  I wish the pliers were heavier duty (and I need to know if Vic is going to continue it into the future before I beat on it as an EDC)

Honorable mention:  Wenger S557.  Love this tool.  It would get carried more if it had the Vic style can opener.  The Wenger can opener just can't handle the big cans of green beans.  :-\

Ct41
Has everything but the kitchen sick but enough tools to make a kitchen sick. Good for everywhere.
Ct34
Little thinner. Great all around sak and has the bit driver.
S17
Good all around sak, but really shines in the brush, farms, gardens and the such.
OHT.
Nice locking blade and sd. Basically a big huntsman without the scissors
Farmer
Smaller all metal OHT. Built like a tank. Good all around package without bogging you down.

1. Midnite Manager, dressed in Ruby. Never EVER go anywhere with out it. (It was my very first SAK)
Digital Timekeeper Alarm, modded an old Timekeeper with scales from a Timekeeper Alarm.
3. MN Minichamp, added Silver Tech scales and rock it as a pendent from time to time. I use it of course, it's more accessible hanging from your neck than at the bottom of your pocket.
4. Master Craftsman, just fitted it with some red plus scales and it's looking fresh.(new scales add new life)  The MC lives in my exercise/heavy labor bag.
5. Voyager, love the onyx scales. Wish they'd make a sig lite or MM in a similar onyx. Older onyx scales look kind of brown.

My favorites are:

Climber
Sportsman
Bantam
Alox Cadet
Farmer

Being my favorite doesn't mean it's going to get a lot of use.

Your question is not very clear on the purpose for which we'd prefer our SAKs: as users or as collection shelf queens?

My top preferred 'users' for me at the moment are:

1. Alox MiniChamp (silver at the moment, could be splash or green or blue or red or...)
2. LE Farmer without ring (in black with red shield)
3. Carver (Apocalypse Green)
4. Vintage Pioneer with cross, brass and no ring
5. Vic Heritage

In terms of the collection the top ones are chosen on slightly different criteria. I'll skip those for now. It would also be hard to chose just 5 that are top.

For me, I can't say that there is a particular order to mine in terms of favorites, but here's the list:

1.  Mechaneer (Syph custom Alox)
2.  Yeochamp (Syph custom Cellidor)
3.  Ranger Plus
4.  Explorer Plus (don't have one, but really want to get one)
5.  My new Vic One Hand Master Road Tour

Custom/modified SAKS not included, my top 5 (in no particular order):
  • Classic SD; Unmatched usefulness at that price point.
  • Farmer: Pair this with a Classic SD and you can solve 99% of life’s problems.
  • Wenger 557: Wenger’s best offering.
  • Vic Compact: great for urban EDC, and the absolute perfect companion to any plier-based MT.
  • Swiss Champ: hail to the king, baby.

If I didn’t have my custom SAKs, I’d be carrying either a Farmer paired with a Classic SD, or a Swiss Champ.

For me, the top 5 rarely change, maybe just get an update from time to time. ;)

Vic Rambler - It's been on my car keys for years and no other SAK or keychein multi has managed to kick it from there though many have tried. ;)

Wenger Traveler - most pocketable SAK ever while still maintaining lots of functionality. Just got updated yesterday to SS scales.

Wenger Forester/Classic 17 - my second SAK and one I carried for 12 years. Love that model and have bought a few of them in different variations.

Victorinox Executive - my dressy SAK. For weddings and such. Black scales of course. ;) The "large" blade is very capable for its size and enough for most things you'd need it in such occasions, and the scissors are great for cutting loose threads.

Wenger SI - this was a tight race with the Vic Ranger and while I love the tool range that the Ranger has and the utilisation of space on it, the SI is the one that finds its way to my pocket more often than the Ranger.

This list is organic, and will change on a regular basis, however ....

1) Wenger Traveller - best size, shape and weight, great tool assortment too
2) Rambler/Manager - keyring perfection
3) Wenger Pocket Tool Chest - Love this little thing
4) CT41 - Like a Swisschamp but better
5) Yeoman - Best format with an inline Phillips

At this time, I enjoy the:

1) Cadet Plus by Swiss Bianco - Love having a Cadet with a saw
2) Executive with Mammoth Scales - ancient beauty
3) Camper - my first SAK and I still like the design
4) Salesman - it's so compact and perfect, but I won't use it as it's a safe queen
5) Classic SD whistle, hope to own another some day and put it into use
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

1.  Climber (with mini-screwdriver) - My regular weekend carry.  Pretty much everything I need (and nothing I don't) to make the most of my usual leisure activities.

2.  Alox Soldier - My regular weekday carry.  Solid basic tool set, but very slim in the pocket.  Nearly indestructible in normal use; has survived multiple drops onto concrete with only cosmetic damage.  Textured scales make it a good worry stone while sitting in meetings.

3.  Centurion - My regular work carry.  Large locking blade and perhaps the best large locking screwdriver/small pry bar in the business make it suitable for light industrial duties, but at only two layers thick still very comfortable to carry.

4.  Electrician Plus - Kept on the end table in the living room for odd jobs around the house.  Mostly gets used to open packages.

5.  Classic SD - Kept in my desk at work.  Primarily used for personal grooming.

1. Classic SD
2. Recruit - I'm beginning the really like the 84mm platform, and I like very basic SAKs.
3. Pioneer/SI/Soldier - Another solid knife
4. Camper. The one with the corkscrew. That's the Camper, right?
5. Those are the only ones I really carry, so no #5

1. Traveler - My EDC for a number of years. A lot of utility in a compact package.
2. Champion - A bit large for carry, but one sits in my desk drawer and sees a lot of use.
3. Pocket Tool Chest - A very useful knife when size may be a problem.
4. Huntsman - A regular when outdoors.
5. Super Tinker - A one-time EDC which still sees occasional use.
