 :worthless:

My Top 5 SAKs, clockwise from top left, Rosewood Swisschamp, NS OHO 111mm Trekker, Climber Road Tour, 84mm Alox Lumberjack, Alox Farmer.  Each of these I either have multiples or in different versions, so they could either be safe queens or beater kings.

Swisschamp - urban use miracle tool, fix most if not all travelling needs, carry in bag
OHO Trekker - favorite outdoor tool/backup to fixed blade
Climber - urban EDC rotation
Alox Lumberjack - my survival kit choice of blade
Alox Farmer - another EDC rotation candidate, carry esp for light hikes

Honorable mention, Swisstool Spirit Road Tour.  My fav MT is Swisstool Spirit X.

My top 5:

1. Rambler (very useful EDC. I've found myself going to this one more than others.)
2. CT 34 (A bit thick, but invaluable for a guy who works on electronics/computers like myself.)
3. Mechanic (I've carried one of these since I was 12.)
4. OH NS Trekker (nice lock blade, cuts like a madman. If it had pliers, it'd probably move up to #2.)
5. Tinker Small (soft spot in my heart for these little guys.)

1) Minichamp Alox, on my key ring since I had it.
2) Farmer Alox. I know, the saw is probably overkill for urban carry. but it's a SAW!  :D
3) Pioneer Alox. Excellent value. Missing a saw though.
4) Cadet Alox. Excellent value in a smaller size
5) Soldier Alox 1971. My birthyear, for showing off.  :D

1. Explorer Plus
2. Fieldmaster
3. Cadet
4. Midnite MiniChamp
5. SwissChamp

Had to modify my post. I had the fieldmaster in front of me when posting this. it loses the top spot due to the placement of the phillips

Vic Compact - Almost all the tools I really need when I'm on the blacktop, other than a phillips, and my Pirahna has that. Perfect partner for a Rebar or Wave, and for days where I really can't carry much of anything it is compact enough that no one thinks anything about it. If only they would make the file on the hook standard across the line.

Vic Huntsman - All the tools I want with me when I'm NOT have an in the office day other than the phillips, but my Huntsmen (I have several) are usually partnered with a PST. This is my baseline SAK- you an be more than a Huntsman, less than a Huntsman, but there is only one Huntsman

Vic Onehanded Trekker (plain blade) - All Victorinox needs to do is make a good pocket clip that can be added to this and you really do have a modern Soldier. Big enough to do some pretty serious work, a good set of tools, now if only they would make it with a right handed spring.

Vic Farmer - Like a Huntsman without scissors and the inline awl kicks is the best in class IMHO. The standard Soldier, a classic, no fuss, light, thin, nearly unbreakable design.

Vic Golfer - The real one, the 84mm model. Just like the Compact, only smaller, one that has a keyring partners perfectly with a small flashlight and a p4 squirt or a similiar multi.

Well, for me:
1. Victorinox Cybertool 34 (see avatar) - just a great tool set, so useful for urban carry.  I've had mine for around 13 years and I still think it is a great SAK.
2. Victorinox Ranger - I love this tool set for camping, all the useful stuff for camping/wilderness.
3. Victorinox Rambler - fantastic small EDC SAK.  Works great on the keyring. So much better than the classic (and just by adding 1 incredibly useful tool).
4. Victorinox Farmer - Such a nice alox SAK.  Love the awl and love the blade.
5. Victorinox OHO NS Trekker - For something a little bigger, great for camping with the blade & saw.  The pry tool is strong & beefy and can also be used as a screwdriver and I guess even as a bottle opener.

There are so many other good SAKs though like the Cadet, Explorer, Manager, Executive, Cheese Knife, Trekker (also NS like my OHO version), Minichamp & Bantam.  In fact I like every SAK I own!

A couple of mine are customs that blur the line between "genuine" models.

1: Aloxplorer  =  old Pioneer Settler (clip point small blade) plus Openers, Scissors and Mag glass/Philips layers. Making an Alox version of the Explorer

2: Farmer with Scissors  =  Alox version of the Fieldmaster/Huntsman

3: Executive with custom Horn scales.

4: Wenger Evo16

5: 111mm Hercules with black scales

All of these feature in the regular EDC rotation depending on how my day is expected to turn out.

Wenger SI. Out to dinner people friendly carry.

Victorinox SwissChamp XL. Needs a loving home.

Wenger Sports Knife. Also needs a loving home.

Victorinox Grand Prix. To be restored or modded.

1-swisschamp:the master and the commander of the swiss army knives.but a little heavy.like it carry it in it's survival pouch with pencil, compass, sharpening stone etc.
2-midnite manager:little treasure chest for edc.generally attached to a carabiner on my belt.enough for %99 of daily issues.i made it from a signature, swisslite and rambler.red ruby of course.
3-classic sd:good for suit carry.i have 14 of them.
4-spartan:i just like it.added a mini screwdriver and a stainless pin.
5-skipper:good for fishing, camps and sea travels.serrated knife cuts like there is no tomorrow.

i was planning to buy a workchamp before i buy my skipper with a good trade, but i think skipper is enough for me now.sharp big serrated blade, pliers and in-line phillips; a good tool package with bonus marlin spike/shackle opener.

A bit surprising there isn't more alox in here...

1) Syph Alox Custom: Pioneer with scissors and inline Philips. I literally carry this every day. I haven't been without it since I got it, and it's perfect.

2) Pioneer: The spirit of the Soldier lives on, and still offers a substantial pocket knife in a tiny package, with the extra tools being very useful for (what I feel is) most people. It looks great, works well, and carries easily.

3) Cybertool (34): What can I say? I work in IT and I actually use this thing all the time. It's useful.

4) Carver: So much cutting! Two large blades, a Pruner blade, a saw and an awl. Initially picked up for the veggie picking outings, it proves an important entertainment tool when I'm out of the city at a get-together I'm not really interested in. Much time has been spent on porches and in backyards carving away the time.

5) Alox Rambler: The thinness of the alox version of the Rambler make it much nicer to carry off the keychain, and I can live without the scale tools. The alox makes it look gorgeous.

And to make it a bit more convincing:

Just FYI for you guys who are putting custom SAKs in. They are not usually getting counted, unless they are very similar to a production model. For example, and alox Explorer would get counted, but a Carver or Lumberjack would not. Custom Pioneer with scissors and Phillips sounds brilliant, but it is a custom knife that most people could not easily buy.

They are nice knifes though!

I'm starting with Broken Record Funtime, but I have to be honest here...
Also, I'm naming the Victorinox models here, but the nearest Wenger equivalent is usually exactly as high on my list. In fact, my EDC these days is a Wenger Soft Touch T814, which is basically a clip-point Wenger version of the Huntsman (well, it was my carry, and will be again when I finish the Rebar Callenge).

  • Victorinox Huntsman (whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat)
  • Victorinox Outrider (my regular satchel carry)
  • Victorinox Camper or Climber (depends on your saw/scissor preference)
  • Victorinox Spartan (I feel like MacGyver carrying one of these)
  • Victorinox Recruit or Driver (my first SAK—same knife, different scales)

At this moment my top 5 SAKs are...

1.Alox Farmer... Blue. Great SAK to carry, and great placement of the saw.

2.Explorer... Older model without the hook. The old standby, been using the explorer since the 80's.

3.Alox Pioneer... Older red model without the shield. I love the smooth scales and look after being worn in. I'm nostalgic about the older red alox models with brass liners and pins.

4.Wenger SI Soldier... Love the bail.

5.Swiss Champ...Older model for Nostalgia.

This list is, of course, likely to change. The ones that aren't likely to leave the top five would be the Explorer and the Farmer.

The above is referring to an alox Explorer. Things seem to be quite different down there in your corner of the world, because here, people don't bat an eye at a full size Swiss army knife. Sometimes, maybe the 111mm ones, but certainly not one 91mm and smaller.

I'm said to hear you have such timid "sheep" down there.

...
This list is, of course, likely to change. The ones that aren't likely to leave the top five would be the Explorer and the Farmer.

My Explorer is an 80s one too. I just received an Explorer I ordered for my brother for his Christmas present. (side note: Back in the 80s when I got the Explorer, he got a Swisschamp. He only carried it a handful of times, due to it being "pocket-hostile.")

As such, I can compare old to new directly. Here's what I noticed:

  • The Phillips on the new ones are better. On my old one, that Phillips was a bit too small for a #2, and a bit too big for a #1. It would work on either, but not that well. On his new one, it is bigger and shorter, so it fits a #2 better. In this regard, I like the new one better.
  • His has the one-piece magnifier. It has about half the magnification of my old one, but of course a bigger field of view. Which one is preferable depends on how much magnification one wants. The new one is probably more durable...
  • His new one, I ordered with Plus scales in emerald green. We didn't have such cool options in the 80s...
  • On his new one, the ring that holds the key ring is at least 3X as thick. On our old ones, that little tab was more or less an afterthought. On the new ones, it is part of some other full-thickness piece
So, while I love my Explorer for the nostalgia factor, the new one is the superior tool in most regards, in my opinion.

This is my Top 5 list, it probably won't be changing anytime soon:

1. Alox Pioneer/Soldier  (I like the keyring)
2. 108mm Solo            (technically a slipjoint?)
3. Vic Huntsman           (loads of utility in a slim package)
4. Vic Handyman          (bulky but ultra useful, I almost put a Vic Ranger instead)
5. 2008 Soldier            (for those rare occasions I'll need the serrations)

I left the Vic Spirit out since it is not exactly a SAK and doing so helped me keep things simple.

If I had to pick from what I do not own, it would probably be 5 of the alox customs I saw on the thread.  Sorry for coveting your knives.

From what I own:

1. Victorinox farmer
2. Victorinox serrated spartan with yellow scales
3. Victorinox Midnite manager
4. tie- Victorinox outrider, OHO Vic Trecker serrated
5. Victorinox Explorer

I preferred Wenger 5 years ago and still own a practically Mint Wenger Handyman that I will never sell because it was a gift from my kids.  My most recent purchase ironically was a wenger for 8 bucks shipped.  It is like a handyman but without the scizzors or toothpick/tweezer.  It was a bit rough looking so I got it for cheap.
