I found them quite uncomfortable to use over longish periods, due to the stiffness and thinness of the tool :(, but the spring was a pretty good idea :)

Well, I think the SOG scissors are pretty substantial. Like Micky said, the scissors are very uncomfortable with prolonged use. But, they don't compare to the SURGE scissors!

I agree.

The part where your thumb presses is thin, so anything after a few cuts would be uncomfortable...or cutting something heavy might pose a problem.

I don't see how they can be improved and still fit into the Powerlock design, so I don't think SOG "Dropped the ball" with the design at all.  But scissors like the SURGE! with the plastic piece your thumb presses on, or the old Wave with the folded over piece of metal to broaded the thumb area are more comfortable.

Oddly, I had thought of posting on a similar experience in the Leatherman section. I haven't used my SOG scissors yet, but I have used my Leatherman scissors for the first time this week. My mother has been hospitalized for a bit more than a week. I was sitting with her when a couple of nurses were bandaging her. They had misplaced their scissors and I decided to make a test. I had a Schrade Toughchip and my old Wave. The Toughchip would not cut one thread in the gauze (some sort of high strength mesh), but rather bent the threads between the blades. The Wave's scissors, on the other hand, would sever the gauze before the blades even closed, and their design did not hinder cutting in the least. I was VERY impressed as were the nurses. I was then warned that having the Wave on hospital grounds was forbidden! Keep it hidden or leave it in the car! :D

Sorry to prattle, Bill.

Yeh me to , hope she's on the mend .

The reason I posted this was because at work we wear gloves when handling glass but alot of us cut the tips of the fingers off the gloves so we can feel the different finnishes . The Swisstool has always been fine with this , it doesnt cut them with ease but it doesnt have too much trouble . Yesterday a workmate came upto me and asked if I'd cut the tips off his gloves for him , no problem I thought its a chance to use the Powerlock but it just wouldnt cut them  :( Not even close  :(  The first thing he said was " there not as good as your others ones " .It also wouldnt cut a stretch bandage either  :( . Paper and card no problem but I do feel a little let down . Had to pair it with my Vic climber today incase I needed scissors .

Thank you both for your kind concern- you've both always been paragons of kindness since I've joined this forum and I thank you. I'm afraid my mother's just wearing out after almost 90 years. Fix one thing and two break down...

On the subject of the scissors, I thought the Leatherman blades were very similar to Vic's design and perhaps that's why they performed so well. My main complaint with the SOG- though as I said I haven't confirmed it via performance- is that their design, like Gerber's, allows for a bit of a gap between the blades and too little area on the "thumb arm" resulting in finger fatigue. My Gerber Legend has "Fiskar" scissors supposedly, but I find their scissor blades too short and the "thumb arm" too narrow. If you try to cut anything of significant resistance, you can't get too much downward pressure or your thumb begins to ache. I suppose they perform adequately. I tried to cut a small, thin strip of leather on a backpack once and gave up, using the knife blade instead. I was REALLY bothered about the Toughchip's scissors as this is their primary tool and it performed so poorly. I still want to use the SOG as my primary work carry (I hate to say this, but primarily because if it's damaged, I'd be bummed but not devastated) and after this thread I may try out the scissors.

Thanks again, Bill.

Its a shame mate, but 90's a pretty good age, and as long as she's got you to look after her, she's in good hands :)

My sincerest thanks to you as always, MD. I hate that I've sidetracked this thread (once again, my fault). My karma's been very bad lately, hopefully it won't rub off.

I'm going to check out my SOG scissors tonight and see how they cut. I'll post back tomorrow after I know.

Thanks again to you all, Bill.

my smoke and prayers Biru, may your mother and you and your family get peace and comfort sir.
and never worry about changing topics here, it's part of the joint ;)

as for the SOG scissors I was very disappointed with them, and why I took them out right away.
I couldn't cut paper proper, let alone anything else.

they could learn a lesson from Swisstool or Leatherman.

I've been trying out a pair for a week or two.

My experience has been that they are alright. Not especially comfortable or sharp but the cutting edge is large and appears to handle most of my commonly scissored items just fine.

The only problem I have with them is due to their non-folding nature. Because of this the interaction between finger and scissors is not very ergonomic and requires the adoption of a uncomfortable posture to allow full closure of the cutting edges.

Thanks to all for the well wishes. Unfortunately, my mother had to be put into a morphine coma and died yesterday of a virulent pneumonia. I do sincerely appreciate the good thoughts. This forum must have some of the kindest, most multitool-obsessed gentlemen and ladies on the web.

I apologize sincerely to dunc for upsetting this thread. :twak:

On a lighter note, I tried to cut the same type of gauze (this time not in the hospital!) with my SOG and, while it did better than the Toughchip, it did not cut as well as the Leatherman. I wonder if the SOGs would cut heavier material, though. The SOG scissors seem a bit more substantial than the Leatherman. I didn't try any heavier materials for fear of ruining the scissors.

Thank you all again and my apologies to dunc, Bill.

My sincerest condolences Biru, may her loving memory live on in you and all she touched.

I know what it's like, my mother passed in my arms a few years ago on thanksgiving day.
I was the baby in the family and I was very close to her and today I have good memories
of so many good times with her. Peace and Comfort to you and your family...

true Smitty, the covers aren't a big hit either but I still really like my SOG,
I still trust it for most things, and the best pliers in the business IMO

Thank you all. I truly appreciate your condolences.

As Smitty and WD said, I do like my SOG as well, though I haven't carried it as much as a Leatherman (I plan to change that this summer). The scissors aren't AWFUL, they could maybe use a bit of tweaking. A flat tab on the finger bars like the Leatherman scissors would help with fatiguing the fingers. I actually like the Victorinox scissor design better than the Wave's. You can deploy them faster.
