Etching M'Farmer
on: November 03, 2013, 06:01:11 PM
I'd like to etch my initials onto the inscription plate on my farmer, but I have none of the usual tools. I've marked my initials on the liner behind the CS on my Explorer with my SI awl, and it turned out pretty well, but nothing I'm proud enough of to display.

Anyone got ideas?

I've been thinking of wax and vinegar (acid etching) but not sure if it will be effective.

Wax and vinegar, interesting idea... but I doubt the acid is strong enough. I have never tried etching anything... but experiments with dirty 2p pieces suggest that domestic vinegar is strong enough to hurt like hell when you get it in a cut, but fairly pathetic when it comes to "alien blood" style destruction. You might be looking at weeks before your initials shine through.

How about nail varnish and Ferric Chloride?
I don't know if it will work as I've never tried it myself

I don't believe it will work, as there isn't really any iron in the aluminum handle. The Ferric Chloride would need to react with iron content in the material for it to etch I think...
