The C-17 is the biggest military aircraft I've seen at our airport.  I'd LOVE to see a C-5!! :dd:

This was the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover AFB. There were C-17's on the ramp nearby, and a Pakistan AF C-130 taxied right by us and took off. Let me try to get some more pics to upload. :tu:

Impressive looking birds! What engines do they use? The tailpipes look a bit like J-79's.

:) Yeah it really makes him look tiny. Here's the little bugger in the cockpit of a C-141. He didn't want to leave it! :D

Anytime, Baby!  Or: Darn Iranians!

I've been fascinated by military aircraft since my early childhood- back then, you could see quite a lot of them flying over Bavaria. (F4 Phantoms, Panavia Tornados, sometimes even F104 Starfighters from Italy, lots of A10 Warthogs, Mirages, Austrian Saab Draakens... interesting times!)

The only plane I never had the chance to see was (NOOOOOO!) the mighty F14 Tomcat.
I was literally collecting EVERYTHING related to the Grumman F14 (Posters, models, patches... you name it!) and my nickname still shows a deep affection for that huge bird.

A first blow was the retirement of all cats in 2006 (Thank you, Cheney, I always knew you were a Dick), too early for me to travel and see them.
The second blow came when Iranians tried to get spare parts for their rotting fleet of Tomcats (Yes, Iran still operates Tomcats...another interesting story).

As a result, most of the remaining Tomcats, stored in the desert, were simply destroyed, ripped apart and anihilated, so no one could get vital parts from them.

And, also bad for me, as a part-time aircraft-part collector, ALL parts of the Tomcat were banned from surplus stores and suchalike,
which menas I'll never get the chance to get my hands on even only a rivet of a real Tomcat. The only memorabilia you can get are keyring-fanblades of dubious origin  :-[

What a sad end for such a great plane!

Maybe, one day, I'll be as lucky as these guys in Ireland....

Tomcat

The same month as the USN retired the Turkey, the Royal Navy retired the Sea Harrier FA2. Seeing these legends being retired may have been the first time I truly started feeling old!

@tomcat81 - my mom's cousin worked for Grumman for decades. He was on the F-14 design team. I got to see the production line at Calverton when I was a kid! :tu:

Wooha, that's absolutely amazing!
Do you have any memories on your trip to Calverton?
That must have been the trip of a lifetime for a kid!
Tomcat, impressed!

I do remember getting to sit in the cockpit of an almost-completed Turkey. :)  I've always had a soft spot for the F-14, as did Dominic. He always called it his "baby bird".  Grummans in general are loves of mine. I was born in Bethpage NY, like so many of their aircraft..... ;)

The F35s fly non stop around the clock out of Eglin. Our current house is actually getting new windows installed through the Base, because a jet broke one.

I love the sound of freedom, but breaking windows seems like a little too much.

I haven't taken many pics at work lately, but here are a few.  The gunships are a first here at our airport as far as I can tell.  Super fricken cool!!
