If it looks too good to be true, it probably is - Spydie fake

I know, you shall research BEFORE bidding.
I know, if a deal looks too good to be true, it nearly always is.

Nonetheless, It was late, I was bored and instead of going to bed I surfed eBay.

I bid on what i took to be a badly described and badly photographed, Damascus Spyderco.





Not that my pictures were any better than teh ones in teh auction 

Seems there never was a Damascus Native.
Seems the supposedly FRN scales are painted aluminium.
Seems i overpaid by 4 times.
Seems I´m a dumbass.

The knife itself is not really bad - It opens nicely, has a halfway decent edge and would be a very well made folder, on par with the lower Kershaws and Ka-Bar I think if it was not a fake.

Keep your eyes open and don´t bid on a Spydie Native Damascus unless you are willing to buy a fake.

Now - What shall I do with this thing? I have been thinking about sandbalsting teh blade to remove the etched on fake damascus pattern and practice Jimping on teh spine as well as maybe refinishing teh handle in a nice colour.

Or I´ll sell the thing, stating clearly what it is, ship it and forget about it.

Worst thing about it that I really like the size, so I might need to start looking for a real Native, too

Hehe, that one has been around for a long time now. File for a counterfeit claim on ebay and you'll get your money back, and probably don't need to send it back.

They aren't bad if you know what you are getting, I bought a fake sebenza and it's actually quite nice.

It was a private seller who sold all sorts of stuff and probably did not know what he was selling. It was not advertised as a Spyderco and the pictures, while not great,  were good enough that a Google search should hev warned me It was my lazyness that cost me, to be honest.

I would put in a paypal claim for receiving a counterfeit item and get my money back.

You also better watch out for Spyderco Military's and Paramilitary 2's apparently also very good fakes of them going around, even if you look at the photos you can't tell if they fake.

Nah, the auction ended some time ago, I paid via bank transfer and the seller was honest.
Lesson learned.

None the less. It's says spyderco on the handle and it's fake. Even if the guy was honest it's a fake and he probably knew that. I would contact him as just ask. Never hurts to ask :/

aw man that's a real bummer lowtech.  sorry to hear about the bum deal hopefully you can salvage the item if you decide to not pursue a refund of sorts.  thank you for posting this so others wont be duped or if they are unsure of an item better to pass.    nice of you to do this.

As the seller told me he did know nothing about the kn iofe and he never advertised it as a Spydie, I´d have to prve him wrong and that´s more hassle than this is worth.

But on to teh other part of my questions: What would you do with the knife? Being a fake, I don´t want to sell it.

Maybe I´ll test stonewashin in a piece of plastic piping with some rhinestones, machine the Logo off the handles and beadblast and repaint them.
Toxic green maybe and then sell it as a "Zombie Hunter"

yeah i say go for it and have some fun.  might as well enjoy the knife especially if its a decent one.
