PST II w/o the PST II value/rarity
on: November 05, 2013, 05:06:20 AM
I recently purchased an early PST II without the PST II marking dated 0197. At the time I believed I got it for a steal paying only $30, but I'm not sure what it's really worth and how rare it is. The tool itself is in absolutely mint condition showing zero signs of use on any of the tools. So to those more more knowledgeable than I, what is it worth/how rare is it? Cheers, John

I have a few of those myself. Two PST/PSTII hybrids. My theory...Leatherman found a long to be thought lost parts bin of PST handles and decided to press them into use in a variety of combinations...whatever was needed to pump out a working tool.

Anyways...here are a few interesting ones that I have.

From left to right:
1. Leatherman PST with date codes 0696/0596. This one is an honest PST.
2. Leatherman PST/PSTII hybrid with date codes 0897/0797. This one is odd. Has Leatherman Tool on both handles but PST II tools inside.
3. Leatherman PST/PSTII hybrid with date codes 0297 on the Leatherman Tool inscribed handle, and 0802 on the Leatherman PSTII inscribed handle. The interior tools are all PSTII.

As for price, I couldn't tell you. I bought these ages ago and only paid the going rate for a PST at the time. The owners had no clue about the differences from a regular PST or PSTII.

Note the different knife blade serrations found on the two hybrids.

EDIT: I also checked my collection and found a painted camo PST with PSTII tools inside dating to 97. My guess...not that uncommon.

I see PST IIs with PST handles all the time on eBay, and haven't noticed any price premium over regular PST IIs.

Would you say the $30 I paid for a mint but not in packaging unmarked PST II is a decent deal? I have no plans to sell it as I'm a bit of a collector and I quite admire the PST II and being unmarked adds a bit of oddity to me.

My understanding is that the PST II marking came in on later models, a while after the PST II tool set was in production.  $30 sounds like a good price for a good condition one IMO. :)

Yes, that seems a reasonable price for one.

I am glad I snatched it up then! The seller did not advertise it as a PST II, just as a "leatherman tool" and had a starting bid at $25 which is why I believe nobody else bid on it.

Do you have pics of the PST 2 ???
I can post a pic of it later tonight when I get home

After a little more examination I would grade it more as near mint. It was a couple very light scratches on the handles and plier head and the metal file has a slight discoloration, or just has collected a little dirt (haven't tried to clean it). Still I believe it to be a very nice example of an early PST II.

Mind if I ask what the date stamps are in the handles?
