Hello from Australia
on: November 11, 2013, 06:56:00 AM
G'day mates!

As a multitool tragic, I thought it was about time I joined up instead of just lurking around these parts.

I'm primarily a Leatherman fan, and own at present. Most get used in my average week (alternating between an IT support guy at work, and a home handyman / DIYer at home):

-Rebar
-ST300
-Wave
-Micra

I also have a Charge TTi put aside for my 2 month old son when he's ready (so probably another 4 months or so right?)

My first Leatherman was a Blast which I purchased new around 5 years ago. It was a great tool which saw regular use around work and home, but I sold it to make way for the TTi. Things kind of snowballed from there...

Recently, I was helping a good friend of mine find out more about his PST that he has owned since about 1987. The PST chronology project on here was extremely helpful- great resource guys! As it happens (and I blame my friend with the PST for this) I will shortly have a few PSTs of my own to add to the chronology project  :D They range in age and condition, but I suspect with a good clean / lube / polish they should come up really well.

That's all for now, will post some photos of my collection sometime soon

Oi, Oi, Oi.

Welcome. What part of Oz? I'm in Briz-Vegas.

It's not a bad place here, you should like it. Even the Seppos are good blokes (and girls). ::)

G'day and Hey Mr626

Welcome to the forum - It's fab.
I am also a newbie from Oz based in Sydney.

Everyone here is sad and totally obsessed - but quite a nice bunch really - and defintely retain their sense of humour.
And as you have already discovered - an amazing source of info.

Had to smile about the Leatherman for your boy.
I am mainly a SAK guy - And I also have my boy's first tool ready and waiting. See pic from Amazon.

He is four - so already behind your boy's age, for owning his first tool - But I think I could give it him soon - eh?

Have fun

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

greetings and welcome,  Charge TTi for the boy sounds like a great first LM, also those PSTs by themselves can be quite addicting.  Great to have you aboard.

Thanks for all the welcoming words.

To address a few of your posts:

-The nearest major city to me is Sydney, but the reality is  live 'in the bush'. Which is just how I like it. The only negative is bushfires  :(

-I actually own two SAKs already. One is a mechanic, and the other I'm not sure of the model. It was given to me by my uncle who purchased it while he was in Switzerland during my birth year. It has the name of the town it was made in on it (some 20 syllable word starting with L).

-Flashlights...well I'm afraid I'm already beyond hope in this area. Nothing super expensive mind you- just lots of Crees from DX.

-Sheath wise, I haven't yet found a reason to stray further than the standard Leatherman range. For my largest load-out I have a MOLLE XL, anything larger than that I'd rather use a maxpedition pouch. I quite like the Skinths but I'm not sure I'd wear one myself.

-I am looking forward to restoring some PSTs. Some will be to keep, and others will be gifts for others this Christmas. I tried to find some posts on here about what methods people use to clean/polish/lubricate their MTs but I didn't have much luck. Any tips?

Oh, and while I do like the idea of a Soldier for my little guy (and one for dad too!) it appears to have a one-hand opening blade? If so, our wonderful customs won't like me importing it

Welcome from Canberra, glad you weren't hit by all the recent bushfires ("wildfires" for our US friends), but it must have been a bit scary there for a while.   :o

One-Hand Opening knives should be OK, OZ customs do get tetchy about anything they can interpret as "assisted opening", which seems to include anything with a loose blade that can be "flicked" open.  Get your seller to label it as "Used multi-tool" and you should be right  :tu:

I'd warn you to watch out for your credit cards and paypal account, but I suspect it might be too late for that  ;)

Thanks gregozedobe. Some of the fires came pretty close to us, but its just one of those things you live with. Our house is prepared, and we have home + contents insurance if the worst was to happen. The local RFS (firefighters) are great at what they do.

I've had some dealings with customs. My experience has been that anything that even 'looks' like it could be opened with one hand can be an issue. I had one case where I purchased a particular Kershaw knife from a US ebay seller. I know for a fact (reading reviews and watching youtube vids) that it requires two hands to open. Yet customs still seized it because it looked (to them) like a one hand opening knife.

I could have appealed the decision- but if you go down this path it has to be in court. A lot of time, effort and hassle for a $30 knife! And with a pregnant wife I just couldn't be bothered.
