I will start with a rather poor picture of mine

At the top...
My copy of Lofty Wisemans survival tool
A cheap but useable Machete
Stick chopper with micarta and brass handle
Billhook with micarta and brass handle
Billhook 'work in progress' handle
Billhook With a typical rat-tail tang
A couple of billhooks/slashers with socket handles

Feel free to add your own pictures/comments

More common than the machete here in Queensland, Australia is the Cane Knife (sugar cane)

stock photo, mine is over at my mum's place at the moment.

Lol

I got 2 vintage billhooks a few years back. Awesome weapons tools.

Is it true that is where they originate from? I'm sure I read someplace the hook was often used in battles against armour!! Where the hook would simply slice through the steel.
What a tool - respect.  :salute:

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I don't feel like going to the shed now. :P I'll try to post some pics tomorrow or on the weekend. A few old sickles, a scythe, a machete, a few old axes, ...

Other way around really.  The hook aids in taking off TREE limbs, not human. ;)  The billhook was used as a medieval weapon (England especially) but started off as an agricultural tool that was pressed into the role, rather than being designed for it.  Later you did get 'billhooks' that were purpose made weapons, but it's roots will always be more benign.

Here you go mate.  WW II era folding machete.  Issued to both British and US troops I believe.

I'd love to find one of those on a car boot sale or something like it. The ones I find on ebay are always in the $200 region or more and that's a bit more than I'm willing to pay. ;)

Really??  :o  This actually is one that I picked up at a glorified jumble sale, IIRC I paid something like £16 for it.  This was about 15 years ago though.

From $75 to $425 based on the condition and if they have all the parts/sheath. Currently listed two with sheath BIN prices for them are $320 and $425. (without shipping)

I will say that whomever designed the folding machete needed a good kick up the rear, the handle is so square it gives you blisters if you just look at it sideways. ::)

Oh, and before I forget, this is my billhook.

That thing gives me the shivers.
What a truly hideous looking tool - it reminds me of something they would have used when they hung/drawn/quartered people.
I can't actually think of anything scarier, except for maybe a scythe  :to:

Did anyone watch Tudor Monastery Farm last night?  A bit of billhook and axe work being done in coppicing a willow wood.

And of course when I do remember to take the pic it 's already pitch black outside.

A quick pic of the sickles and scythe for Nick. The sickles could use some derusting treatment as they haven't been used in ages and it shows. :-\

BTW, if you own a scythe, how do you sharpen it? Around here it's been customary to use a hammer to hammer the edge back into shape. YOu'd have a special chair with a small ambus like thingy in the front and you would thin the edge with the hammer and then sharpen it with a sharpening stone but not like a knife, you'd use a special movement you must have seen in old movies if you'r enot from the country. ;)

Found the pic of the chair.

We call it "klepanje kose" here.

Thats how they used to do it here aswell,

Tiny little Anvil thingy used to fit on top of a fence post and you would hammer the edge in to being,
this would form a sharp edge and work harden the steel at the same time so you would have a tough blade with a hardened edge

God I hate the look of that scythe - can you imagine what that would do if swung in the wrong direction....... :ahhh

As for sharpening, I used to have a scythe - that's where my hatred comes from!! To sharpen I used the cigar shaped sharpening stone as shown to me by the elderly gentleman from whom I purchased it from.

Just had a horrible thought - the damn scythe may still be at my parents home  :ahhh

I'll try and find my billhooks tomorrow - they are hidden away in the shed!!

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Can you believe my mother let me use a scythe to clear a massively overgrown garden when I was 7 years old?  What was she thinking?

Still, I do have the standard number of fingers, toes and legs.  Oddly, so does my brother.

Well I didn't use a scythe, but I did "help" my dad with cutting down some brush when I was like 7 with a billhook, loved every moment of it :D

Funnily, being taught to chop kindling by my dad at an even younger age doesn't seem as bad as being let lose with a full sized scythe.

Well, with a proper scythe, if there's noone else around, you can hardly harm anyone with it... I mean how can you possibly hit yourself with a scythe?

Besides hitting an occasional rock hiding in the tall grass I don't think I ever decapitated anyone.
