Besides hitting an occasional rock hiding in the tall grass I don't think I ever decapitated anyone.

Hey sparky, that's fantastic.

I think there is something honourable in hard work. I really do. But I bet anyone not conditioned would pay dearly the day after.

As previously mentioned, I did/do  have scythe and remember attempting to cut the meadow at my parents home years ago - it certainly wasn't as easy as those chaps made it look, and yes, I was stiff the next day...only a little
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I got home to my parents for Christmas to find two billhooks with no edge whatsoever - I think they'd be better at bludgeoning wood into submission rather than splitting it. Took it upon myself to slightly remedy the situation but I'd left most of my sharpening gear at my house.

I then found a hand powered bench grinder in a shed and have sort of managed to put a reasonable edge on them, you wouldn't want to draw it across your hand but it's far from shaving sharp! The problem is holding the billhook at a sensible angle, it's fine when the handle is on the left but swap the handle on to the right and the grinder's handle keeps hitting it whenever it turns

Hey ho, I think an electric bench grinder but do as a future Christmas present, if I remember next year!

Can you believe my mother let me use a scythe to clear a massively overgrown garden when I was 7 years old?  What was she thinking?

Still, I do have the standard number of fingers, toes and legs.  Oddly, so does my brother.

Well my grandfather made a scythe for me when I was 4 or 5 and I used to help him cutt the grass. He also gave me an axe where he made the handel to fitt me so I could help him when he was cutting lumber in the woods or firewood. I also have the standard number of fingers, toes and legs oddly enough.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Just got these two.  The bottom one is a real beast and is a WW1 British Army issue.  Both need sharpening and the smaller one has a bend near the tip which I will try and get out

Well it appears that the tax return was important (at least to the wife). Anyway I had a little time and knocked up this today. Its not fully finished and the PIC is poor. I will try and finish it tomorrow and get a better picture.

Wow!  Where can I get one of those?

Dr. Arvin Sese here in Philippines makes these by hand. Most of them are made from ball bearing steel but others are made from leaf springs. The balance and weight are perfect, I expected no less but still found myself astonished when I held them. The guy definitely deserves his reputation as one of the best bladesmiths for working tools in Philippines. That is saying a lot when you consider that everyone here has a machete and that his are the favored blades for the military here, Jungle Survival Instructors, and even a few survival "celebrities". It's a shame his grips aren't as nice as his blades though.

Dmanuel,
I love the look of those  :tu:

I agree wholeheartedly, they aren't all mirror polish and perfect finish but they look like a tool that will last me for many years to come. Plus, there is just something about the rough around the edges look when it comes to handmade blades!

Edit:
FWIW, he ships to Europe all the time. He just sent out a whole batch (25+) for a French SRT team. And they are quite reasonably priced for handmade pieces from high quality steel. Around $40 for the Parang and JEST (Jungle Environment Survival Training for US/Philippine soldiers) Bolo and around $25 for the Sundang.

Two fixed blades and another picture of the Sundang can be found here.

Sorry I'm just a little late here Tony. Yes, I've used it to trim branches off of osage orange trees that were in the way. That is a never ending job. Those osage orange trees are always popping out fresh branches every time you turn around.    :D
