The Impromptu Non Scientific Test has been Completed..My Boys and I adjourned to the Backyard and Wood Pile for the Test..My Oldest brought along his Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel, a Christmas Gift last year..

We tested out the two with a couple of Basic Tests..First was trying to cut 2 litre Soda Bottles filled with Water..This is something I have done before with my Ka Bar, and my Cold Steel Rajah II, so I felt I had the basics down to accomplish this..I had a bit of difficulty doing this with the Hibben, unlike the Video BudK puts up..I don't think it is  reflection on the Knife but me..I did not feel comfortable getting a Blade this size and weight moving that fast and I believe I hesitated a bit..My Oldest felt the same way..Niether of us had any problem doing this task with the Shovel..

Our Second Test was basically chopping up some Tree Branches on a Block about 3-4 inches in Diameter..Both the Shovel and Knife had no problems cutting Newspaper Ads Cleanly at the beginning of our experiment..We took pics at 10,20,30 blows..The end result believe it or not was the Shovel fared better than the Knife..How could this be? Well my Son and I have a few theories..

1. The Hibben IV is neither Fish or Fowl too thick and heavy to be a Machete too long and awkward to be a Hatchet. The Shovel is lighter and I believe due to the lighter weight a bit more controllable
2. Edge Geometry- The Shovel has a thinner edge and allows it to bite deeper than the Hibben IV..To me the edge on the Hibben IV is like something you would find on a Hatchet before thinning it out some
3.Controllabilty/Comfort/Confidence- All three of us felt more comfortable swinging the Shovel versus the Hibben IV..The Knife is a pretty heavy piece of Metal, stopping Mid Swing or adjusting in swing just is not in the Cards with this, at least at this stage of the Game..Maybe after more use this might change..I am not saying we were afraid of the Knife, just respectful and careful with our limbs and other assorted Body Parts..I am no Sly Stallone, but at the Gym today I benched 350 lbs, then Hack Squatted 630lbs for multiple sets of 10 so I'm not weak or feeble either..For the record I'm 44 years old 5 foot 9 221 pounds.

Things that could improve the Hibben- The Grip does not offer a lot of area to grasp or isolate from the shock of chopping Wood This could be improved with a Para Cord Wrap. Thinning out the Edge Some night help with the Tool Biting in deeper and taking advantage of the mass and length of the Tool..Spending more time with the Tool clearing heavy brush or limbing a tree or two definitely will help with my confidence to use this knife safely and efficiently.

What is it for? It definitely was an Impulse Purchase I really had no idea in mind other than that..I was lured in with a Video on BudK's Site which promptly shipped out my knife after receiving my Order. I will say I a pleased with the overall quality of the Knife and Sheath and I feel I got my Money's worth. To me like I stated earlier this knife is neither Fish or Fowl. Messing around on some standing Tall Grass quickly re enforced that the Weight and thick Edge make it a Poor Machete. The less than comfortable Grip and weight make it a less than stellar Hatchet. How it does as a Cleaver, I'm not sure..I will leave that for another day..Perhaps this Summer if I Barbeque up a Chicken I will see what it can do splitting one in half.
Can it be used as a Survive All Do All Knife? I'm not sure at least right now..I do feel that the knife will hold up to a decent amount of abuse and maybe once I get comfortable with it and improve the Grip/Edge I think it might make a great Tool in a Semi Urban Enviroment It will definitely bust up a Pallet or hack through some Wooden Doors and process Material to be used for purposes such as Shelter or Fire Building..Pared up with a Decent SAK like an OHT or Huntsman It could get the Job done in a pinch.. The sheath is pretty decent and will cover the Blade when not in use or transporting the Knife..It's Appearance can be intimidating and I guess in some situations that can be a plus..I will leave any Marital Uses/Applications to those far more qualified to comment than I.

In Closing I am not disappointed with my Purchase even if it ends up being nothing more than a conversation piece I am comfortable with the Overall Quality to say it will take a bit of work to break it..Pics to be up Shortly, thanks for the Well Wishes, The Reading, and for putting up with my Long Post

It is a Behemoth..That is part of what drew me in..I have cut back on my knives and passed a bunch off to my Boys..I felt I was missing a "Big Knife" and I really like the Rambo Movies..To me this one seemed like the meanest of them All.

Think it can be...Maybe with a few changes, then again maybe it is just me and I am not comfortable with it yet
