 I really wish I did my homework and found this site first. I just got a Surge off of a forum, but I didnt ask for pictures and didnt realise that there was an older version.  :think:

I dont suppose that guys find the old ones collectible or something?

Welcome to :MTO: Orpheus :cheers: nothing wrong with the original Surge :salute: They did tweak a few things with the new version but many people love the original and it can withstand quite a bit of use :tu: I would say use it and don't worry if it's not the new version :cheers: and if it happens to break in use then send it in to LM and they will fix or replace it :cheers:

Sure the older version Surge is still collected and used by members.  Are you enjoying yours?

I only just received it so I havent put it through its paces yet. I tend to be fairly hard on my tools, not through negligence or abuse but just the nature of what I need them for.

My big concern that jumps out are the non replaceable wire cutters; as the son of an electrician I learned that having a set of "good cutters" necessitates having an ancillary pair of "crappy cutters" so that your good ones dont get bunged up cutting stuff you shouldnt be. Obviously having two sets defeats the point of a multitool so I see my OCD preventing me from using them.

I know the leatherman warranty is good but does it extend to cutters?

Keep in mind Mr Tim Leathermans favorite tool was the Charge without 154CM wire cutters and cuts thru nails while touring.  I saw recently the he's carrying the Charge TTi with 154CM cutters. 

I'd echo going ahead and giving them a proper work out, you maybe surprised. 

The new one lost the mini bit holder.  For some thats a good thing.  Also looses the scissors rubber handle nub.  The best thing is the bit exchanger.  Its a lot more secure now.  I had no real issues with my old one but there was some loose saw bits for some.  There were some handle changes and of course the 154CM cutters.

The old version to me is every bit as capable and LM will stand by should yours fail to perform as designed.

I did sent in for a fix on an old surge but they sent me a new version instead. Love the new wire cutter, but miss the eyeglass screw, so this past Christmas, crack open the handle and swapped out the medium flat screwdriver with a wave eyeglass one.

I was not aware that the original SURGE included the micro driver bit as does the WAVE.

To me, it does not make sense to have the small driver on the large tool, as it is more likely to allow the user to apply enough torque to strip the threads or the screw it self, even the bit in the WAVE can cause the same issues. 

I worked in the service industry for nearly 40 years and can tell you, that I encounter more damaged screw heads during repairs, due to the wrong size driver tip used for a screw type. This cause double the time to repair.

With the small screw head and the large handles of the Surge and even the Wave, I wonder how many glass frames were repaired verses damaged by the combination?

I agree with the Cutter of Loops above, perhaps more because it must be quite unwieldy using a large heavy tool to do precision work.
