Same reason why its handy to have both type of pliers in your toolbox. Needle nose for detailed work and stubby type for heavy work in confined spaces.Surge is a hevy duty tool so some people give up the "detail work" part to have more grip in confined spaces. Basically for all those bolts close to the wall.

Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work you can always hit them with it.
I havent seen but only one of the new styles anywhere!
I still don't understand how people can carry Surges.
It'll probably fall right through my pocket.
