I have a Surge with full extras that used to be a user, until I got my Swisstool Spirit and realized how a highest standard quality multitool feels like. So I'm not thrilled by the new Surge, unless it is more robust and has less play and rattle.
So, those that have used both, is the new one better and with lower manufacture tolerances?
Per your suggest, I went to store to handle Swisstool and did some research.
You are correct, Swisstool is perfectly built, superior fit and finish, I will definitely purchase one in future.
But I still prefer the New Surge over Swisstool for the following reasons.

1. OHO blades.
2. Outside quick access saw and scissors.
3. Heavy duty strong pliers with replaceable wire cutter. (in case they are damaged)
4. Adaptable Bits
5. Adaptable & easily replaceable saw blades and file. (in case they are damaged and wore out)

I am under the impression of the Swisstool has larger selection of tools but not not necessary heavier duty.
(many of its tools are exactly same as other SAK)
Even-though all tools are accessible from outside, but they are slower and harder to deploy (finger nail required).
I would see myself spend a little longer to navigate through its two mass groups of tools to locate the one I need.
And its boxy profile looks a little boring.

Just my own opinion

One more thing about the new surge. Until now my I handled it around my girlfriend and coworkers who are quite used to me and my toys.
But this beast can be really intimidating... When you whip the surge out (mine is smooth enough for me to flip it open butterfly knife style) you can see proper WTF looks at peoples faces. The size, new plier head and the shine of the steel really makes an impression, and not always positive.

I have 2 of the old ones, and 1 of the new versions (black oxide), and I would say they are all the same in the fit/finish/tolerances department.  Great for their intended purpose of actually being used as MTs (and I would characterize the Surge F&F as excellent), but still not nearly as smooth as its Swiss competitor.

Absolutely brilliant idea. As I have the small bit in my bit kit I used it once or twice in a pinch by holding it with the pliers. But it's a pain to use it that way, you have solved my problem :)
Please write to leatherman with this idea, also post it in the mod squad. Many people sacrifice the small driver for other tools, but with your solution all you need is to drill a small hole with dremel somewhere on the tool to accomodate the bit.

So simple in just putting the eyeglass driver bit in the slot where the belt/lanyard clip goes in with the spring lock holding it in place. No need for any drilling or anything and just removing it and putting it back in the bit card when done. I just tried it with my Wave and it works just as well.

By "drill a hole in any tool" I meant that you can do this even on mt without the pocket clip slot. Like rebar or wingman.

Exactly, no modification.
Fine for driving small screws, but not for poking or drilling.

Depending on how much torque you would need to tighten an eyeglass screw, the tension on the Rebar locking tab should be strong enough to hold the bit and tighten/loosen a tiny screw. Just tried it with my Rebar and it held enough to loosen and then tighten a screw on a pair of sunglasses. :D

You're right though, on a Wingman/Sidekick there isn't a locking tab, hole, or any slot to slide the eyeglass driver bit into.  :(

On another note, I'm going to have to make a trip over to the Army Exchange to see if they got any New Surge BO versions in. Haven't seen any New Surge (SS or BO) at the Navy Exchange yet.  :o

I love the new surge :multi:. so much better for a few reasons i even started edcing it in my back pocket. My old surge rattled even with the blade ex-changer empty. If I picked the tool up and let one side hang down it would open a tiny bit it wasn't bad or faulty and didn't ruin function. But I have handled other LM tools with nice tight lock ups and solid construction not a hint of change jangle. plus the end caps looked over tightened and warped.

This Updated Surge is fantastic its build solid all my old concerns are addressed and i got less BO rub off than my first one. Now if they would make a better pocket clip that didn't wobble in the surge they would have covered all bases for everyone. I didn't mind they ditched the little eye glass driver i always figured if you dropped that tool on your glasses it would smash them any way.

While there is a smurf storm on east coast, it is beautiful out here on west. 6 Hours hiking trip with the heaviest MT, no problem.

I got a huge box of off cuts from a friend who makes slings full time. A lot of thinner stuff but it still makes for great lightweight bands!

All those bands...you can rig one of those surges to be a sling shot. Open it up and hold it upside down

Uh, isn't that there a WAVE?!  Hey, Canada - what are you trying to pull??   :pok:

Btw, did you hack your Genus yet, Metro?  I've got all my stuff, no action yet.

P.S.  Glad you two got your Surges, but sorry you had so much trouble there, Chako.  It hurts when our MT friends up north ain't treated well by LM.  N'est-ce pas?

My typical carry these days alternates between my New Surge and my ReCharge. Depends on how I feel about the extra weight/bulk.

I also have 2 old model Surges, but prefer the new one hands down. It's such a beast of a tool. Feels like I can abuse it all day and it will just say "Please sir. Can I have some more?".

First dissapointment with the new Surge. Just like the old one. I had to cut a split ring (keyring) and now there is a half mm play in the plier head. The pivot rivet is the same as old surge. Now the wire cutters just jam on thin wire, paper and plastic cable ties instead of cutting them. What is the point of "strongest plier head we have produced" and 154 cutters if the center rivet remains the same? I can't even return it for warranty as I doubt they have them in uk.....

It was a standard key ring made of about 1mm round wire, got it with one hand. We have a Surge killer, key ring....
