Would like to convince Leatherman to upgrade my current Surge to the newer version, but I don't see that happening with their new people.
Perhaps I should take my '93 Hiace back to Toyota and see if they will replace it with the current model....  ;)

It is arguably a warranty case so they should at least repair yours... and maybe, if they don't any longer carry the parts, they'll replace it with a new one. Just fill in the warranty form and return it to try.

I doubt the new exchanger will fit on the old Surge without further mods - probably the pin needs to be at least 0.6 mm longer (= difference between thicknesses of the new and old exchanger).

Well, meant the newer version of the blade exchanger.

??? ???
Sorry - maybe I'm being particularly dense (the post-lunch espresso has yet to work) but I don't see the link between the newer blade exchanger and the old Surge (which you said you wanted to upgrade to the new model)...

As to upgrading the cover - and I take that to mean the part that rotates on the tools pivot to cover the blade exchanger and lock the blade inside the tang/jaw part (?) - to the newer model, I *think* the exchanger tang/jaw part is identical between the two models, so the covers should be interchangeable in principle, so the only remaining problem is to source one and whether it fits in thickness. As to modifying the cover to the new configuration, that might be possible if you can fashion a spring and a hole to let the spring through in the cover. The spring, at a guess, should be 0.6 mm spring steel, which IIRC is hard to cut/drill...

So the newer version just has a hole in there and spring steel as a tensioner? Am guessing here: The new holder is thicker, which holds the spring end in between where the tool implement slides into? Guessing there would be a small "click" heard when closing the cover.

Was hoping there was something more to the new blade exchanger. Is the newer Surge's "liner lock" thick enough to keep the blade exchanger cover locked in from moving, or can the cover still slide back to replace tools when the blade exchanger is locked in?

As for the car comment. Where there are enough cars sold and there is a defect, manufacturer's recall the cars to have the replacements replaced. LM knew of the blade exchanger issues thus why they made an upgrade to it. Yet they don't sell enough to warrant a recall like cars, since a defect in cars could be potentially unsafe to human lives - whereas a tool is minuscule in comparison. So to ask for an upgrade, for a fee, is not unreasonable. ~ Some people go out of their way to intentionally break a tool and expect LM to cover the replacement. <-- That is far worse than asking for an upgrade option.

The end of the spring pokes through a hole in the top cover and locks into the hole on the Leatherman saw or file (no audible 'click' for me). I have just realised my jigsaw blades do not have this hole.

The liner lock only acts on the main body of the blade exchanger. The top and bottom covers can swing open to change the blade whilst the blade exchanger is locked.

As for the car analogy, sorry I thought you were talking about a superseded design rather than a defect. Still not sure which you are saying it is.

It's the same cover then with a spring added. Probably not as much change then concerning the Blade Exchanger other than perhaps more friction to hold the tool blades in. Thanks, that was what my main inquiry was about.  :D

The Surge replacement tools still look to be the same on the Leatherman site.

Well I got my Surge a few weeks back but never carried it due to the defective can opener. I was going to return it for a replacement but I kept having issues receiving a return label from the seller and I honestly just got sick of the situation so I told him to issue me a partial refund and I would just send it to Leatherman to be fixed. I decided I’m just going to carry it as is for now. I never use the Leatherman can opener anyways so it’s not a real issue for me. I’m enjoying my new tool finally!

Glad you are carrying the Surge, was wondering where in process you were.

But, I do believe a picture is required Captain to make it official.

Someone told me (probably earlier in this thread) that I will enjoy it no matter which Surge I get. They were right.
At the time I preferred the stainless steel although I love the BO OHT I got more recently.
The two-tone looks

If it's the "Premium Leather Sheath" I would prefer the nylon one myself.

I have the older and newer style Surge both in SS but I would love the BO or 2 tone ones :dd: Sheaths don't make me any nevermind as I carry them all in a molle sheath now but I do have the leather one with both of mine and they are my preference over that style of nylon sheath but it is all down to preference ;) :D

~
Do you mount the Molle sheath on you belt? Or pocket carry?

My belt is wider than the allow gap for the strap.  I can see mounting to a tech vest, or bag with Molle system, just not onto a belt.  My suspender straps are to wide as well.

The Molle sheath has me puzzled??

I wear the molle sheath on my belt and I took a few pics of it to let you see how :salute:

Hope these help :tu: I don't use the middle loop on the back of the sheath as it also makes it to narrow for my belt as well ;)

It rides rather low but does get a bit floppy every now and then :ahhh :D

Also this one is holding up to everyday use quite fine compared to the other style of molle sheath :like: The other one with the smaller grommet fell apart a bit to quickly for me :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Hope these pics help and I would like to give out a shout out to Bensasupertool for gifting me this great sheath :salute: It was a very fine gesture and I wished he would join us again in posting :-\ but such is life, it has a tendency to get in the way sometimes :D

Thanks.  I did try that a bit, the sheath did not ride correct for my needs.  And also, suspected the material (small hole style) was to weak for everyday belt carry.
My ST300 rides in a large box sheath and does not have any issues. My Wave rides in a Ozark molded sheath instead of the premier leather or nylon sheath.
A Surge being heavier, I would not want it loose in its sheath.

I like this style sheath for the Surge. This one is for a Wave but still has room for the file in the storage slot. I have the Bigger one that was for the Core/Surge and it has room for a bit card.

I second that... what I think Steve means is identical to the one below that I use for my ST 300 VX but I don't have pics of it with the Surge in it. Fits like a glove with the bit card and extra file in the tool slot and has side webbing for small things.

Now, BO or shiny Stainless?
