Impulse buy; I coulden't pass it up!
on: May 20, 2008, 02:58:43 AM
Scanning the multis' on ebay and came across this;

It looks pretty used, and the seller said the file blade was broken...but for $16.19 shipped I coulden't pass it up! :D

I don't see it going into my EDC rotation, but I've always wanted to handle one.

And I've lost track of where that SOG parts lot I bought went...I traded it to Def I think...but I think he traded it away to someone else after a bit   Who'sever got that lot now I might be on the market for a Paratool file blade :D

I have used and distributed a few parts, but let me know what you need for it and I`ll send them on to you.

For $16, it`s hard to argue with- I`d have snagged it happily for that much!

Cool I'll keep that in mind, thanks

I'll wait until I get it in hand and look it over before I decide what needs to be replaced/installed.

I remember years ago I actually had a need for a pair of pliers that had an angled head.  I was trying to hold a nut while I drove a screw in the interior of my car...but nothing could get in to hold that nut, so I drove to the local discount store and bought a pair of bent nosed needle nose pliers!  I don't think I've used them since, but when you need them nothing else will do.

First of all, it was my first MT so it has a sweet spot in my heart.

The paratool is one though little thing, I have abused it for 10 years now and the only thing that has broken is the Philips screwdriver, it just broke right of but I got a replacement from SOG free of charge. All of the tools are good and I love that you can take it apart and clean it

There is no locking mechanism for the tools so be careful. If you use the tool that is on the left handle (you se that there is cut out a little half circle) the hole thing can be a little wobbly when using the tool next to the "wall", in my case the saw. Butt a little rearranging of the tools (put the tools that you use the least next to the "wall") will solve that and you get used to it.

It's a old tool with it's limitations of the time, butt it's a good tool. Anyway that is my view

I love the design of the Paratool, that was why I bought the SOG instead of a LM. Oh, I almost forgot, it is a dream to hold and use, the handles on it is round and weary comfortable to hold. It's a nice MT to have in your collection.

Nice score!

I got my first Paratool last week and am loving it. It's old technology, as Medic82 mentioned, no locks and is kind of finicky with the opening sequence if you don't dial in the tension just right. But it's a fun tool.

Let me know how the handle/plier interplay is on yours. On mine the handle on the side of the opening tab must be tightened to the point that one-handed opening is impossible or else it wobbles and does not lock stable. I've got some JB Weld drying right now to see if I can take up the slack and make it lock open better.

I don't know why LM didn't think of that themselves. It's just pure genius at work, the cleaning is a dream, if something brakes you can still use it while your waiting for the part to arrive and you can make your own tools if you want too. I just love SOG

Well I got it today and it's pretty ratty...looks like it had been sitting in a parking lot for a few years!  The handles are bent in a few places which don't hinder operation, but it does hinder it from closing properly.  Both blades are butterknives, and there's gunk in every moving part.  The file is busted to, but I already knew that..

The only thing I can't really repair is the bent handles...there's even a tiny hairline crack in the metal near where the pliers meet the handle :(

Has anyone used SOGs warranty repair for something like this?  Being run over by a vehicle of some kind doesn't exactly constitute a manufacturer defect :D

I would contact Chris @ SOG and ask him if there's anything that can be done.

Good idea..I just sent him a PM.

I'd like to use the tool but I don't trust it since one bolt can't be tightened all the way due to the bent handle >:(

Chris got back to me and said to contact the warranty dept, so I just sent them an email asking how much just the handles would be.  If it's too much I'll pass and use the tool as a light duty desk tool, but if it's reasonable I'll go for it.

Do you know if you have a non-locking file?  One with a flat tip?

The rounded tip one with the locking notch goes to the Powerlock, not sure if it would fit in a Paratool

Hang on, I'll have a look...

Yup- I have the flat ended one.  The round tipped one seems to be the same length so I'm certain it would fit- SOG designed all the parts to fit into all the tools.  They should also all have the locking notch.  It costs more money to build multiple variants so I'm pretty certain they are all made the same.

I don't think the warranty department ships out handles or heads.  The last time I spoke with Chris, he said that heads and handles have to go in for warranty work.
