here's a tip I found for a guide for your slabs/scales when your first setting them ;

Clamp a "file" guide onto your knife blank at the ricasso. Use this file guide to line up that perfectly squared end
of the handle scales to exactly where you want it. If you're using a guard, do it first, before doing the handle scales.
Put the guard (if your using one) against the file guide. Once the two guards are on the scale, you can take the
file guide off and use the back ends of the guard (again if your using one) for your guide for the handle scales.

after you've epoxied and set them on with pins and they are cured completely, you can take off the file guide.
The fronts of your handle scales will be perfectly aligned every time, using this method!

you may already now this but I thought it was a very interesting "temp jig" instead of "eye-balling"
or guessing exactly where they should be in case they move while setting them on and during curing :)
I have a whole page I saved for doing this, that's just a part.

Well i've taken the rough saw marks off both sides of both blanks now, took a bit of elbow grease but it's done :) Think i picked the right side of the blanks too, the grain is much nicer on the outside than the inside! :) Can't really do much now though without a blade :( Which should hopefully be here on monday!

Got my first surprise in this project so far, the liner material.....not what i was expecting at all! Its not a bad thing i was just expecting it to be quite floppy but its quite rigid. It does however go well with the walnut, glad i got black not red though :)

Good call on the split, was thinking it was a bit off topic :D

As for custom scaled SAK's, i doubt my work would be half as good as the more experienced lot, so i'll probably just leave it to them! Not saying i wouldn't give it a go though....if some one wants to lend me one to practice on.....
Yeah, I'll just send you one of Ben's mate...he's got that faux boned handled 108 hasn't he, I'm sure you'd love to put a bit of wood on that :D

You leave my SAK alone!!  >:D >:D

Knife seems to be coming on real nice Ryan.  :)  Can't wait to see the finished result.
I'm back!!

Aww, but it would look so much better with some wood on :D

Can't wait for the blade to arrive so i can start making it properly!

I agree it would look nice, but unlike most, I am quite fond of the fake Stag scales.  :)

That's going to look quite nice when you get it done Roadie.

What kind of epoxy are you going to use?

That stuff should work well.  I've used it a lot and it's pretty strong stuff.

Damn you two now look what you've made me do!! Cutout the left hand side handle blank to within a couple of mm of the tang, need to drill some holes and glue the liner to the handle, although probably in the reverse order of that :)
