Haven't bothered to read the whole thread, but I agree with Lynn, the term is derogatory and I personally don't use it, and don't like it when others do. I am glad it's not used much here and hope it stays that way.

We are all "sheeple" in some form or other; holding a doctorate in cognitive psychology and neuroscience, I could say that all the people who believe in the fluff out there about chakras, etc. are also a form of "sheeple", just as someone who is an expert in pharmacology could use that term to describe me or anyone else without an advanced knowledge of the topic. So let's just avoid it and keep MTO the civil and enjoyable haven that it is.

Sheeple eh? OK .....

Firstly I'd like to acknowledge and agree with Mr Whippy's statements about the unthinking followers. These people really do exist, and I don't have any real qualms about being derogatory to them as a faceless mass, though may make exceptions after meeting individuals. There is however a problem with the term which does not appear to have been covered thus far in the conversation.

Sheeple is used (in the wider context, not just by pro knife/gun peoples), as "everyone who disagrees with me" - the notion being that if you don't see things the way I do, it's because you're not thinking. However in real terms there will be "sheeple" on both sides of any debate. I personally do not think the term is at fault, but the common usage.

The way the term is used in dialogue does not allow for those people who disagree with you because they have indeed thought it through, and have formed an intelligent conclusion which opposes the decryer. As an example, an alternate phrase that is used here is NKP or non-knife person/people. This implies (maybe) that the individual/s don't support the general carry and usage of a pocket knife let's say, but without labelling them as unthinking followers, when in fact they may have put a lot of free thought into forming their conclusion.

Just because someone thinks different to you, does not mean they are wrong. The people who are definately wrong are those who do not think at all, but they are everywhere, in every camp on every sociopolitical standpoint. The other people who are definitely wrong are those who will judge others as being 100% unthinking, purely because they disagree with you!

I therefore put it forth that sheeple is a valid term, but anyone using the terms sheeple may well fall into the category themselves if they use it to describe (and justify to themselves) all dissenters. So is it really just sheeple that use the word sheeple?

Yup, but that's one part of the point I was trying to put across. I also believe that the term sheeple is indeed valid, and that there are people that use the term who qualify for the title themselves by virtue of the points we both made

If they call unbelievers sheeple because that's what everyone else with their mindset does, without forethought as to how the other person may have reached that conclusion ..... oops!

Paul (Heinz) said "we are all sheeple in some form or other". I do believe we are all capable of being sheeple in some form or other .... it's just that some of us are more capable than others
