MWDP's SAK scale making hobby (VERY pic heavy)
on: December 23, 2013, 11:14:22 AM
I used to have one of these on the other forum, so it's time to start one here too. I will be posting the SAKs I make custom scales for here. The tools I use are mostly simple and I do the majority of work by hand. I started this some 2 years ago as simply a way to juice up my SAKs but it has since become a full-time hobby as I've had people all over the world request some of my work. I realize that some of you might find this boring as this is basically one and the same thing repeated with different materials, but bear with me :) Hope you like the pics!

PS. I will skip some of my first works for now.

First off, a pair I really liked - Huntsman in plum wood and Spartan in ash wood.

Spartan in alder root, currently in Nebraska.

Tinker with masur birch.

Another Spartan, this time the first one I did in acrylic. This was for a very good friend in California, sadly it got stolen in transport. I still think it's one the best SAKs I did and it hurts me that it's in the hand of some crook...

To replace the stolen Spartan, I did a Tinker with walnut. This is usually a pretty boring wood to anything with, but this piece was amazing.

Another Tinker, now with wenge wood. I love wenge, it's hard and great for sanding and carving.

Wow that acrylic really looks , a shame it was stolen.
The wood ones are gorgeous too. :salute:
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

So, everybody and their mother wanted some of that CF and I ended up doing an Explorer. This friend also made me do my first tweezers slot, this time by hand. Took a while but the fit was very good.

Around this time I found a solution to the toothpick/tweezers issue - I shaped the scales to fit, and then gave them to my cousin, who has a very precise lathe. Couple of minutes on the machine and I get slots that are just as precise as factory.

And one of the SAKs I didn't like so much... I believe this was a Recruit in plane wood.

This was a project for a dear friend. Scientist in Cocobolo, with all the slots besides the pin one.

When you say VERY pic heavy, you're not kidding, are you? :ahhh

I'm glad I have a flat rate internet traffic or I might have spent my whole plan on one thread. :P

This is still one of my favorite ones out of the bunch.

If I'm not mistaken it was one of the first ones. Have the acrylics shop bookmarked somewhere but too many hobbies, not enough time. :-\

I was kinda hoping it's 10 posts per page here so not everything is on one page  :D Yeah I love acrylic. I bought some more and it got here last week so I will be doing some acrylic scales before New Years. It's a lot cheaper in blocks if you have someone who can cut it for you to 3-4mm

I haven't done anything in olive wood so far, but only because it was never requested. I could if I find a good piece I could order. Some of the SAKs that I've rescaled were purchased by me and those are mostly my favorite models: Tinker and Spartan. I just think that thinner models look more elegant with some custom scales... I did do a few Swisschamps as well, just didn't post those photos because the materials repeated themselves.

And of course, thank you very much for the kind words :)

Ah, fair enough. I agree with you, really, elegant wooden scales like this do fit smaller models better :tu:  Ever done any 84mm SAK's?

Climber with box elder burl:

And a knife for RickinFL. He sent me a Cuban cigar box and a Vic Compact and asked me to make scales out of it, while keeping certain words on the scales. It was a bit of a challenge because the wood is soft as butter, but eventually I managed to get it done. I also put the tweezers, toothpick and pen slots on it. I didn't include the pin though, I was afraid the lathe would ruin the wood. Behold - Cuban Compact.

I've seen some of the mods before I registered, and I have to admit that both members do some extraordinary work. It's really nice to see the little things we do differently and the methods they use to achieve their pieces of pocket art. I'm definitely in the right place here  :)
