Nice work, how thick is the copper?  Ive made 84mm sak scales from both copper and brass and found them too heavy so I mostly just use those materials on the 58mm size now.  I made a brass 93mm and that one felt like a tank! :D

Copper is an interesting material though as it ages so nicely.  Looking forward to seeing how you make out.  :tu:

Local supplier has 3mm or 4mm (which I chose), I think 3.5 would be perfect but they don't have that thickness... Brass is my next project. This was all done with an angle grinder and a file and I think it would be much faster if I found someone to cut it on CNC for me. I will have this finished next week, so far I can tell this is going to be as heavy as a brick... Will post once it's done

Ya I can imagine its heavy.  Copper is 4x the weight of aluminum for the same volume.  Its even heavier than brass, as the brass I use is 70/30 copper/zinc so its lighter than pure copper.

I think if it could be machined hollow on the inside that could save alot of weight and still have a nice look.

It's soft for a metal, but for some used to wood and G10/micarta, it's really tough. I shaped it with an angle grinder and a file, the sander doesn't do much here... When sanding/cutting/drilling, copper gets really hot really quickly so a lot of water is needed. I wanted to finish this one today but someone else ordered a Spartan in Burmese blackwood so it's on hold for a few more days

Spartan, solid copper scales. I went for 4mm scales but 3mm would have worked too, I realized that a bit late. Glued with epoxy. The result is a fat, chunky SAK with a lot of charm. Weight is about 110 grams or 3 ounces.

Thanks guys, I don't think I'll be doing more of these. Just too complicated of a material to do anything with it. I have one more set of scales for 91mm, and I will do those probably next month, and I plan to do a cratered pattern on it

Ya I hear you on that.  I like the look of brass and copper as scales, but functionally just too heavy for something I'd want to carry.  Its fine on the little 58s but I have no interest in putting it on anything bigger again either.

Very nice satin finish on the copper, and nice wood for the others. I agree with you for copper or brass, it looks nice buts it's heavy and miror finish is fragile.
I finished a brass Excelsior a few days ago with fileworked scales. It's heavy for a small knife.

Incredible work MWDP.  :tu:

Do you make these for other people or are they just for yourself? I would love to eventually get a pair of custom scales.

Thank you :) All of these are for other people, the copper sold yesterday within minutes of posting it :) I don't collect any of my own work, I usually sell them or trade for alox ;)

MWDP, WOW, you work is fantastic! I think swiss army knives look so much nicer and feel better in the hand when they have wood scales and yours are works of art. I also liked your acrilic scales, very interesting to look at, amazing to see something that started from a block of man made material look so natural and hand crafted, well done.
