I am seeing 'for sale' way too much in this thread. You know the rules mate. Contact Grant and sort something out please.

I stopped putting them up for sale in the sales section, as well as any other type of goods. I figured this was okay, and if anyone was interested, they'd let me know. Hint - they haven't.

I would have absolutely no problem paying a nice cut to MTO on a monthly or yearly basis if I actually sold anything through MTO.

So there's three options:

A) I do horrible work that no one wants to buy
B) My prices are far too high
C) People rarely buy things on MTO

From my own experience and the number of SAKs I've done (well over 200 at this point), I would say A and B aren't really that likely, but maybe I think too highly of myself so I'll allow it as an option.

Either way, Grant's recent comment discouraged me from making too many posts here recently, and this is making it go further in that direction

Maybe you've taken Grant's comments the wrong way.
Link for reference. http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,66543.0.html

He didn't ask you to stop using the trade section.
He pointed out that you could support the forum by either trade payment or operational funds.

Outside of the trade section, like this thread, you can't advertise your work for sale.
Other members pay to advertise, letting you continue to do it for free isn't fair to them.

If you want to be upset at Grant or myself, so be it.
We believe the forum is worth supporting.

I like seeing your work and hope that you will still share it with us but that is up to you.

I won't take credit for this, as I saw the idea on Pinterest (or something similar, I don't go to Pinterest). This is a Victorinox Stubby Sentinel mod. The basic idea is to cut off about a third of the handle and blade, reshape it and make it into a smaller knife.

I marked and cut the scale and blade, cut them off with an angle grinder, then used a belt sander to shape them. I also had to regrind the blade as you can only buy OHT Sentinels here with a serrated blade. I inserted a small backspacer below the backspring in order for the lock to work properly without failing. The backspacer and the scales are made out of rosewood burl.

These are the pics of the final product:

Nice, the red and white acrylic really suits a SAK.

I finally found an engraver to laser engrave my scales with the logo - this Classic in zebrawood was a test piece

I went to the engraver last week and got several pieces done, very happy with the results:

:tu: that red is superb. I like the olive wood too  :)

I have some materials for scale making, and have been building the impetus to have a go at finishing off some of my mods for about 8 months now  :P I'll get there...... eventually  ;)

Couple of questions.....

If making scales to take scale tools, is it easier to just glue them on, or to peen through with visible rivets?

Also, the burl I have has some deep fissures. Do you....
A) Work round that section
B) Fill the voids (If so, what with)
C) leave the voids

Thanks in advance for your input  :)

Peening or gluing is your choice, personally I prefer gluing because it's faster and allows more room for mistakes. Peening is great for a permanent solution, but it requires double the time and disassembling the entire knife. You also need to learn how to get the pin tension just right, and assembling a SAK for the first time is a real puzzle. All in all I would recommend either but the peening process is one of trial and error, so make sure you get some beaters to practice on before commiting to one "show" piece :)

As for the wood, avoid cracks at all costs, it will only get worse over time. If it's a small crack, say 1-2mm, that can be filled by mixing the wood sanding dust with epoxy and filling up the space. Note that this does not look great on all woods and it takes extra work to patch everything up. My personal recommendation is to buy wood blanks or blocks from a reputable seller where you know the wood has been properly dried and cured. It happened that sometimes I only discover large cracks once I cut the piece apart and discover a nasty surprise. All in all, it's much more work patching up cracks than just getting a good piece of wood to start with. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask here or send me a PM. Good luck :)

Awesome. I happen to be looking for 2nd hand scales without T&T slot. Would you be interested in selling a handful of pairs?
(and mods, I'll donate to mto should I succeed in my quest)

Sorry, I usually sell any takeoffs I have, but only those which are brand new. All of these are used and have various scratches and dents and this is why I keep them stashed away. I don't think any of them are worth the shipping costs

Yup.

Victorinox is really cracking down on folks using their trademark.  I'm surprised it has taken them this long to do it TBH.

If you haven't gotten a letter from their lawyers yet, my non-legal expert opinion would be to start counting your chickens and stop using their logo.  hell, stop using their name when/where you can, and remind your customers that aftermarket modifications like this potentially void the warranty, even for components that you may not have modded.

Just some suggestions of course.  It's up to you if you want to risk their wrath or not.

Def
