As said in the SAKwiki picture request thread, I've created pages for most of the Professional series of knives. Big thanks to Martin for providing the pictures for those.

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Wenger+Other+Models

I'm still missing some info to be added there and need to create the ones with two and three blades but am not sure how those blades align and if the main and spey blade are on the same layer or not. I've found lots of pictures of other Professional series knives but none of those so if any of you have those I'd be grateful.

The for the single bladed one I've found a picture by North Man so I'm hoping he'd let me use it. :D

I've divided the SAKs by layers for now and listed them under their model numbers, linking the description to the closest 93mm ALOX knives.

Here's what I have so far on their history:

The Professional series of Swiss army knives (also known as the Handwerker or Handwerkermesser) was produced from the mid '60s till mid '90s with a scale design change around the year 1980.

The original models had nylon scales, no outside liners under the scales, aluminum and brass liners between the layers while the post 1980 models have brass liners and cellidor scales. Some transition models with features from both series exist.

Among the original series of Professional SAKs there was a 4-layer model featuring the marlin spike but the later catalog only features 1 to 3 layer models.

Tools on the Professional series are usually not polished. Professional series were made of parts from the Standard Issue and measure in at 95mm.

These were only available to the European market.

Also, I’m having a bit of a problem placing the Wenger stock knives. I found a few references but nothing specific. :-\ Here's Wayne's blog entry on those.

http://sakfan.blogspot.com/2011/09/wenger-stock-knife.html

Any corrections, additions, further info, pics, ... ?

And a picture + model number for that 4-layered one would be nice too. ;)

I've also noticed that there is no info on the wiki about the Wenger Ranger 38-36, which is listed in Ethrealicer's "Goodbye Wenger Giveaway".

Thanks for offering to create it.

:P

Don't worry, it's on the quite longish To do list along with a lot of other stuff too like updating the complete index of both Wenger and Victorinox by alphabet and layers to include Wenger or Victorinox in the Page name (making it easier to find by google search) but that's a subject for another thread. Let's keep it to the Professionals here. ;)

Wenger Professional 1 74 00

This is a two-layer knife with the traditional Stockman-pattern blades of main blade, spey blade, and sheepsfoot. Unlike most other knives in the Profesional series, the main blade is a large clip blade, which is marked 'Original Swiss Stock Knife' on the reverse.

(The example shown is rather rough and has most of the Wenger shield worn off)

Wenger Professional 1 74 10

This is a one-layer knife with main blade and spey blade. Like the Professional 1 74 00 the main blade is a large clip blade that is marked 'Original Swiss Stock Knife'.

Thanks, Karl. :D

That should clear up the 'Original Swiss Stock Knife' question I had.

Can you confirm the rest of the info I posted in the original post?

Early Wenger Professionals

The early knives in the Professional series (1960s - 1970s) had nylon scales without liners. Later knives have plastic scales with liners. The early knives have either a bail or a hollow rivet to attach a lanyard cord; later models (with the exception of the Stock Knives) have a key ring. The early knives also offered at least one tool (sacking needle) not found on the later knives.

Noticed you're missing a photo of 1 72 41 (main blade and opener). Do you need one?

Never mind, I don't have it anyway.

Yes, I do. :salute:

And with the early Profesional series knives you just posted I think we have them all now. Do you have a model number for that 4 layer one with marlin spike/sacking needle?

Thanks a lot. :hatsoff:

Don't have model numbers for either of the early knives.

All of the tools on mine are bright polished, though some of the saws still show grind marks.

Most of the liners on the later knives I have appear to be aluminum.

Ah, I just noticed the edit on the Chicken (a.k.a. the big Bantam ;) )

I'll leave it as is for now. Hopefully someone will have one of those. If not, I'll crop the picture of it out of the brochure we have on them in a week or so. :salute:

Here another model, if you need pictures you may use these. I don't know the model number of this.
It' was available with and without bail.

Interesting, thanks again. :hatsoff:

I still need to clean up the history text a bit and will add this model to the list.

Makes me wonder if there is a catalog of the old Handwerker/Professional knives somewhere. There appears to have been a few more knives in the original series.

I was browsing the 92-95 catalog and saw the 1.72.21 and 1.72.31 models in there under the Artisan series name. Just the two models. So that's the third name for them already.

I've found a 1 74 10 with a spear piont blade instead of a Clip blade.

That first catalog picture is actually from the wiki. It's what we originally had before I started this thread and made the pages for each of the models.

The one in the auction is already in the wiki.
