cLMf raised this as a question,and its worth asking:What MTs ans SAKs do you need to have here to prevent being banished?

It's nearly an unwritten law that you NEED to have a Vic Farmer,preferably many(2silver,one black,and one gifted elsewhere), but what are the other essentials to establish your ,er, 'credibility'?

I'd propose the venerable,wonderful,and still viable Leatherman PST!

What do you think?

Dare you confess to NOT having a Farmer? Or a PST?

Should Mr Pinchy get a mention in dispatches?

Happily enough, we are a warm welcoming community and don't banish people unless they come bearing copious amounts of spam.

It's a good thing this is done tongue in cheek, because I don't go in for plain knives. I'd be booted immediately. As for my top pic...

I'd say Vic Classic and/or Leatherman Micra.

There is no sane reason that I can think of for someone not to have one or both of them. Inexpensive, readily available used (but still in good shape), don't weigh you down, and both well worth both their cost and weight.

I'd say the standard is a Vic Spartan/Huntsman/Tinker/Farmer and a plier based MT, preferably made in China that is falling apart on you. At that point you start looking for more

I also believe everyone should have at least one MT that they purchased from a gas station/big box store that cost at/under $10, so they have a point of comparison for what junk is.

Bonus points if it was next to a plastic tub of beef jerky. :facepalm:

This will keep people from saying 'This is the worst tool EVER' about a LOT of pretty good tools.

I don't have a PST, have never had a PST and have no desire to have a PST. Sorry!

I wouldn't be as specific as a Farmer but I would say everyone should have at least 1 Alox knife, they're remarkably different to the 91s.

I don't know if there really are any real "must haves" but I do think everyone should own a 91mm SAK of some kind, an old school Leatherman and (I'm perhaps biased here) a sliding headed Gerber.  Everything else is just gravy. 8)

I also agree with you.  I found my first Mora at a flea market for 10 bucks.  It looks like a mini Viking sword at just over 7 inches long with a wooden handle and finger guard.  I have never sharpened that knife and it had been used on multiple tasks from making a fire to skinning a cow.  Still sharp. 

I have since added a Clipper with black and red handle.

My Mora #2 and Huntsman are my go to hiking and yard work knives. Mora has done everything from cutting sod, trimming errant vines and twigs, opening bags of soil, bark, and amendment, cutting roots, and, on a couple of occasions, digging out weeds. The Huntsman is really just there when I'm trimming branches on the two trees I have, and the hand pruner just isn't working.

My picks are a Mora, a SAK Classic, Vic Pioneer/Soldier/SI, Spartan, full sized Multitool of some sort, one with outside opening tools, one with inside. And a Smatchet.

I also have no Vic Farmer...

But I say everyone needs a full size Leatherman. That being the pliers-based medium duty tool that most people think of when they hear Leatherman. :)

I have only one alox and it is a Wenger SI but I do have a ST300 and Rebar!

@Farmer
If there is any qualification it should be a Soldier, its not called Swiss Farming Knifes.

Apart from that I think Qualification should be a state of mind, not a reflection of your finances.
- Do you carry a SAK or MT on a regular base
- Do you spend most of your waking hours thinking what would have been the perfect SAK/MT (combo) for today. And feel the urge to share your conclusions on a forum with some people crazy enough to actually read your ranting.
- Are you willing to read such rantings?
If you can answer all three questions above with yes then you qualify.
