Beautiful and Strange Old Cars
on: January 12, 2014, 01:45:49 AM
Perhaps this has been done earlier and than I leave it to the moderator to decide what to do with this new thread.

I simply would like to know what old cars you like, whether you consider them to be beautiful or not so beautiful or even somewhat odd. Please come up with the necessary pictures.

This thread is not intended to go into much technical detail.

I'll begin with one of the French cars I've always had a liking for:

the Citroën Traction Avant, which was produced from 1934 to 1957.

Traction Avant = Front Wheel Drive.

About 760,000 units were produced.

I remember that back in the 1960s the Citroën Traction Avant could be regularly seen on the roads of Belgium.

Here are some pictures of the inside of this -in my opinion at least- beautiful car.

I'm not sure they come much stranger than this one!

Delorean DMC-12.  I have to say I love this car because it is a perfect example of great intentions gone horribly wrong.  I like the design, I like the concept, but in practice they were difficult to drive because the gearbox was so awful and the engine was painfully underpowered.

However, do a quick Google image search to see all kinds of concepts based on this car, from the Back To The Future versions to updated versions to electric versions (1.21 gigawatts?) to police versions!

I love old cars with very nice lines. To me, one of the best is the 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C SS.

Interesting. I never came across this car before.

I read that the body of the DeLorean DMC-12 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Ital Design, so that would account for the fact that the car looks really good.

The Italians are great designers.    :tu:

The Minerva

Sylvain de Jong of Antwerp, Belgium began the Minerva Cycle Company in the late 1800s. In 1899 he had assembled his first prototype automobile. The car resembled a Panhard in body style.

By 1911, Société Nouvelle Minerva S.A. had become Belgium's largest manufacturer, employing 1600 people.

Sold as "The Car Of Kings and Queens" Minervas were bought by the rich and famous all over the world. Customers included King Albert and many Hollywood stars. These vehicles had large 5.9 and 6.3 liter engines and were gorgeous machines. They were considered to be in the same class as Rolls Royce and Mercedes.

You don't have Back To The Future in Belgium?

Back To The Future [1985] - The DeLorean

I think that's where most folks nowadays remember it from, and for many was probably the first place they ever heard of it!  They weren't very popular.

A beauty to be sure, it reminds me of the Jaguar XK120, but at $7.1 million the Jag is cheaper!

Well now, if you missed out on the Delorean then you probably also missed out on another famous oddity, the Lincoln Futura:

Known more commonly as the old Batmobile!

There has been a time -many moons ago- that I played with the Batmobile.    :D

I believe it was from Corgi Toys.

Styled by Italian sculptor and industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni and the French aeronautical engineer André Lefèbvre, the Citroën DS was known for its aerodynamic futuristic body design and innovative technology, including a hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension.

The DS came in third in the 1999 Car of the Century competition, recognizing the world's most influential auto designs, and was named the most beautiful car of all time by Classic & Sports Car magazine.

If my memory serves me,this is a GN cyclecar from the early twenties. It's been raced since the mid thirties, only taking time out for WW2. This is her at the Crystal Palace Sprint in2012. Motorsport magazine ran a feature on her a few years back

Alpine Renault A110. Just because

Jenson CV541

Wrong number of wheels I know, but how often do you see a Gilers Saturno Sam Remo? And a combination at that? Incidentally ,this one is still raced!

Back in the early 1960s an uncle of mine in Germany drove an insane microcar, which was known as the BMW Isetta 300.

Being only 7 or 8 years old, I had a lot of fun when he took me with him in this strange, little car.

Going back to the DeLorean for a moment, the early ones didn't have a big enough alternator so if you ran too many electrical things at once it would drain the battery :D

Anyway, rather beautiful don't you think?

Another one, the three person Matra Simca Bagheera S of 1974.
I Greek engineer converted one in the early '90s, as a caged four wheel drive with two engines, a Renault Turbo and a Ford Cossworth (if I remember right). It was going uphill like a rocket.
