So, should I pick up a Wenger AP snow?
on: January 16, 2014, 10:36:52 PM
Having been rude about these colourful Wenger SAKs with camo-crap all over the scales, I suddenly realise they will be gone forever, fairly soon.

Apart from anything else, Wengers always seemed to be more pricey than Vics... but now I see a Wenger AP Snow 50 for 35 euros, which doesn't seem too bad. Also an Evowood 10 for 30 euros, which isn't a resounding bargain but, hey, it's wood. Another 9 euros gets the same thing with scissors - a climber, basically, with wooden scales.

Anyone used one of those Ranger type wengers? Or should I go for one of the smaller Evowoods? This will probably be my one and only Wenger purchase. Got enough SAKs already...

Just looking for a souvenir to remember them by before they are totally assimilated into the Victorious empire.

Isn't the blaze ugly as ----?  Or is it prettier in person?

Teehee!

Well I shall give the Snow a spin and if I like it I may invest in some sunglasses and a Blaze.

I personally never liked the AP Blaze, and much prefer the Hardwoods camo theme or the AP Snow.
The AP Blaze line uses exactly the same pattern of the AP Snow, changing only the color.
My only suggestion would be, if you can, to inspect the knives.
All the camo patterns (hardwoods, blaze or snow) have some ugly (in my opinion) inscriptions saying "realtree".
Since all the knives are different, sometimes these inscriptions show up, and sometimes not.

Ah! This I did not know. I thought they all had a standard print.

Ok, maybe I'm a perfectionist, but few pictures to better explain.
This was the knife I first bought

Couldn't really stand those "realtree" inscriptions (plus the camo pattern was not that nice), so I traded the knife!

Later, found a very kind seller, who sent me pictures of two knives he had, letting me to choose the one I wanted.

I choosed the number 2.
See how much nicer it is, expecially on the back side.
There is only a small "realtree" inscription on the front scale, but you don't notice it so much

Basilio posted the complete pattern from which the scales are made a while ago in the Wenger love thread. (took me a while to find it, bookmarked now ;) )

So any part of that design could be on your SAKs front or back scale.

Wow! Can't believe they ruined their own pattern by writing "realtree" all over it.
You don't buy a car and find "Silver Metallic" as part of the paint job.

In the world of camo, branding is everything. You have to remember that most hunters don't care if their clothing/stuff has Realtree written all over it. What they care about is being able to take game up close if possible.
A little Leatherman information.

Maybe I'm missing your argument with the "RealTree" stamps on thees scales. Just thought I would point out that this is a trademark name just the same as Wenger or Victorinox. It would be no different than making say, a Ferrari addition and including that brand name on the knife.

Hm, but they don't write Ferrari all over the place at random angles. They have one carefully placed logo and that's it.

Anyway - the Snow AP will have to wait. My finger slipped multiple times and I ended up ordering an Evowood 17 for 35 euros. Something about the words "Only 1 remaining" that makes me buy all sorts of crap I don't need. (I really would have prefered an Evowood 18 with the phillips instead of the corkscrew but they are only to be found in the states and cost a fortune.)

I really like the looks of the snow camo!  RealTree really does want to make sure there's no mistaking their camo with any others out there.  They also make sure to charge for their name too!  A friend does vinyl wrapping of cars, and he can get a "knock off" camo for about a 1/3rd the cost of the RealTree stuff, and the quality is the same.

Oh so Wenger licensed the pattern? I had no idea Realtree was a separate company.

Yep, having a SAK you can lose so easily is a bit bonkers. But it's still really pretty.

The Blaze, however? For when you want to blend in during a forest fire? Struggling with the logic behind it....

The Blaze was brought out I believe, for States in the USA where hunters have to wear hi-vis gear. Deer are Apparantly colour blind,so they see the tree pattern, and hunters see the Orange( unless they too are colour blind,in which case it's SNAFU time)

Ahhhh! And there's me thinking it was the result of someone taking too much mescaline down the ol' Wenger Design department.

Looking at this thread again was enough to push me over the edge. I've just ordered the AP snow 50. Somewhere a hunting knife is weeping, knowing it will never be used for disembowelling a deer. Doomed, instead, to a dreary life inside a kitchen drawer, emerging only to chop the occasional onion.

I have a Wenger-tastic week to look forward to - an Evowood 17 and this snowy whopper should be arriving in the next few days. Tosh would be proud of me!
