Black Alox 91mm Huntman
on: January 22, 2014, 07:57:37 PM
I was at a local Lowe's and saw the following China Sack for $8 and I thought I'd give it a go:

It turns out that it is complete garbage, but it might be a good scales donor as it seems to line up with 91mm Vics pretty well.

It seems to be lubed with dirty motor oil and the tolerances are all over the place. plus the scales seem to be enameled rather than anondized and they may be made of steel (it is a rather heavy sak).

I'd be happy to send it to a modder to play with, as long as they return it with Vic guts!

A similar Coast knock off was discussed in the last few days and in the past too.

Take a look here for more info.

I wonder if it's worth investing in one of those to try & mod the scales onto a 91mm Vic?

The Coast doesn't have exposed rivets afaict, but yeah they are eerily similar.  And yes, if the scales could used with Vic guts it would be sweet.  The China guts are at best dangerous and at worse life threatening!

As you can see the pins line up rather well, they do seem a bit smaller, so the the holes may need to be widened for Vic innards.

That looks as though it will work out.
I wish I could find some of those in the U.K. to have a play with.
I can just imagine a black alox Super Tinker!

Well, I hit the scales with some acetone and the black didn't budge. Thus, it is not normal enamel if in fact the scales are enameled. I have heard oven cleaner gets anonization off, is this true?

In addition, due to what I have on hand, I believe the scales will be going on an old style explorer, so it should be a pretty cool mod!

Cheers

The oven cleaner has to have sodium hydroxide in it to remove anodization, but yes.

Big time!  I only do aluminum stripping outdoors.  I buy lye which is pure sodium hydroxide.

My modder sanded the top of the scales off and assembled a 91mm alox explorer. I look forward to getting it!
