I'm always trying to buy one more soldier to my collection...but I know now who won all those auctions... :bnghd:

Earlier today I mounted a rescue mission to the local sorting office to retrieve a Soldier thought to be MIA.
 :mn:

My first Wenger SI.   :)  I'm struggling to find much difference between the Wenger and the Vic, apart from the bail obviously.  I thought there would be a year stamped on the tang like my Vic, but alas there isn't.

Look at the back of the blade. The Wenger has a thicker spine almost all the way to the tip and the Vic tappers down. (Black Pioneer used for representation, old pics from an earlier thread)

Also the Wengers have a pointier awl. (Wenger SI in the middle)

The lack of year stamp is cause it wasn't issued. They continued to make them for sale to civilians even after the army stopped buying 93mm and started buying 111mm. The last ones even come without the shield.

Thanks, Enki.     I hadn't noticed the thicker spine on the knife blade, but i like it.   >:D   :D

With regards to the year stamp, I guess I should have been thinking of it as being more like an equivalent to the Vic Pioneer rather than the Soldier.

Also the Wengers have a pointier awl. (Wenger SI in the middle)

Looking at my awls, I reckon the Vic Soldier's is slightly pointier.     In these photos: left to right, Vic Soldier '05, Wenger SI, Vic Electrician.  (Same order for both photos.)

Usually the Wenger awl has one more grind that the Vic does not have, on the top side of the point, making it sharper.

The red Elsener 71 was a rare find new in box.
I've seen red alox soldiers all the way until 1978.
The black soldier was sold in Swiss Railway stores in the 1980's I believe.
A very rare knife now and I have two of them.
They are all Elsener and Victorinox soldiers with one exception being a 1972 Wenger as I don't think Victorinox made one that year.   The same applies for 1974 which I still need to find.
I've been collecting the alox soldier for a few years now.
I just bought any that I found and then started trading with other collectors.
I was then offered a very large collection of alox which had quite a lot of brand new soldiers included.
Most of the fun was finding them and slowly replacing any used ones with a new example when possible.

Hey, can you show the red Elsener 71 box? I would like to know the No. for the old type soldier. Thanks :salute:

Congratulations I thought I was doing well to get one 58 (58 is one of the hardest (and most expensive) years to find)

I put the effort in to get nice 66's as its my year (if anyone has a red Wenger please let me know ;)  )

But a set of 58's is stunning

So if we are traditional - and I am making a big assumption about your gender
  • Your birthday: 1973
  • Her birthday: 1975
  • Wedding: 1997
  • Sproglet No1: 1998
  • Sproglet No2: 2001
Am I right?
Nice One ! - Love the pic and the idea..... 8)
