Deluxe Angler?

Hello all,

I have somewhat of a conundrum, hopefully you can help.

I was fortunate enough to come across a mint condition Deluxe Angler. I can get photos of the actual knife if you'd like, but it is identical to this:

My original intention was to give it to my father-in-law as a birthday present, as he is a very keen fisherman and would appreciate it. However, I didn't realise how rare this knife apparently is. I know my father-in-law would heavily use such a thing if I gave it to him, but I'm a little bit torn about this...

I'm starting to think that I would be better off selling the Deluxe Angler to a collector that would really enjoy owning it as a rare-ish discontinued SAK, and purchasing a more common (but just as functional) fishing-style SAK for the father-in-law.

What would you do?

(Also, any idea how much the Deluxe Angler would be worth?)

Well, the sadists on here will tell you to go ahead and 'use' it. I, however, believe in collecting rare SAKs and MTs so I would collect it or sell it to a collector. Once these things are gone, they're gone for good. I just can't see trashing them for the sake of trashing them...

Yes, this is the problem. To use, or not to use. That is the question 

In this case though, my father-in-law knows nothing about SAKs and would appreciate something like a Wenger Master Fisherman just as much.

I should clarify also- the Deluxe Angler doesn't have a huge attraction to me personally so me keeping it for myself isn't really an option.

Guess I must be a sadist........let him use it. He can enjoy it just as much using it if not more than let it set around and look at it every now and again.

I find no value in a tool being left idle...Especially as a "Collectible".

Not quite- his birthday isn't for a month or so yet which is way I haven't given it to him.

What i meant is at least in my case when i doubt if using something or not then i shouldnt because ill regret it later.  Its good you have time to consider it and let the sak talk to you in the mean time, does he wants to get used and dirty or kept comfy with other exclusive friends....

This is what I'm leaning towards at the moment. I've got no idea how much the Deluxe Angler is worth though- other than the SAKWiki page mentioning it being rare there isn't much information around about it. I can't even find a previous example of one being sold, to get an idea of price.

Prize might not be high, but for collector it might be prizeless. You could try to trade it with someone who would appreciate it.
