Where can i get a blade exchanger?
on: February 04, 2014, 11:31:42 PM
Im in the process of choosing a leatherman to mod to make it a legal edc in the uk.

Im planning on going for a wingman with the intention of stopping the blade locking.  The only downside to this knife is the file.  I love the diamond file so i want to replace the existing one with a blade exchanger and make a small diamond file.

This would also be a use for me as id like to make all sorts of useful tools that will just slot into the exchanger,  such as drivers and a scalpel blade holder.

Any help on locating one would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Making the Wingmans blade non-locking , but safe will be a bit of work. It has no backspring so it wont stay open without the lock tab.
I guess a Kick or maybe a PST or sideclip might be the better basis for your planned mod.

If you succeed with the Wingamn mod, please show us how you did proceed!

Edit: On your initial question - My first stop for LM parts would be Metropolicity - He mods and buys them by the dozen...  :D

You do realise that there isn't that much space for the internal tools on the Wingman? It might be easier to put a locking exchanger on the outside where the blade is and carry a perfectly legal SAK separately.

Kirky has done a couple of bladeless mods (a Wave and a PST IIRC) and I've done a bladeless Rebar. All perfectly doable.

Good luck!

Thanks,  ill give metropolicy a try and see if he can help.

Ive not got the wingman yet,  so im still up for a change of tool.

Im sure i could introduce some sort of friction washer to aid in keeping it safe.  The blade wont get heavy use so hopefully ill be ok.

Yeh i realise it will be tight. I wasnt planning on keeping the tools on the exchanger while its folded.  I was hoping i could make the exchanger fit in the same space as one of the small tools that way i could keep full use of the scissors and knife and also have any other tools i decide to fabricate handy in my pouch or my edc bag.

You could also see if you can source a Charge, and make it thinner, just remove the blades, saw and file together on one side, and on the other side, paste the scales flat against the body. I think Metro did that before, as well...

Thanks bmot.  Thats a good plan.

Ive sent metro a pm seeing how much they are.

I had a new surge arrive yesterday,  the blades dont seem to be loose when the lock is disengaged so that could be a candidate.  Its just a heavy blighter for edc.
