lasercut 84mm and 91mm liners
on: February 07, 2014, 11:38:37 AM
Anyone thought about letting liners be lasercut?

It doesn't need to have a special shape (there are too many, indeed). Just workpieces without holes and just in the outer shape (to use them as outer liners aswell). I could use them, since I often have 91mm or 84mm knifes rough condition. Tools are almost ok, but liners are corroded. Or for a Frankenstein-Mod I need special liners.

Just a raw look around gave me some services making 100 pieces of 84mm liners for around 50€. This is a price range I can think about. But not alone of course!

I'd go for brass Alox-style liners (84mm and 93mm).
If you order a batch, I'll take some!

I'd take some brass too: both 84 and 93mm.
Not really needing any aluminum.

The problem with Alox liners is that you can only get two liners max per bought knife. :-X

If you go ahead with an order, I will also take a dozen of 93mm Alox-style brass liners, and 1/2 dozen of the 84.  :hatsoff:

I had some steel parts cut with laser before and wasnt too impressed with the finish.  Alot of burn marks and rough edges.  That could have been operator error too as I got a really cheap price on it.

I was going to try waterjet for brass next as the sample parts I examined had a very tight finish on the edges that I think I could just buff, polish and use without having to manual sand.

I would ask to see a sample of what the edges of the brass look like before committing, other than that I say go for it.   Waterjet costs more but my impression was Id end up with a nicer edge, if that isnt the case then laser might be cost effective.   I dont know if brass will discolor with heat though, the steel I had cut really did.

Could someone provide me exact dxf- andor eps files for outer shape of 84, 91, 93 and 111mm liners?

I'll try brass then as the majority wanted those. What thickness do you prefere?
0.5mm is too less, 1.0mm is too thick, I think. I'll try around 0.8 mm?

Cheers,

Henry

The pliers and CT liners are thicker than the rest. I think they are thicker for the clearance to the tool beside it.

I think the stock nickel silver liners on alox knives are around 0.6mm.

As soon as I find some time to scan a 84mm and a 93mm liner I'll make some DXFs.
