CAN OPENER TEST DAY 4- and all future days
on: February 08, 2014, 02:16:09 AM
Surprise guest on day 4.  Imperial Kamp King. Made in USA the 1970s.  Cheap snap on scales seem as if they will fall off if you roll it in your hands.

I bought in a little shop in Henryetta Oklahoma for a few dollars.  Nice Carbon steel on the blade.  Takes a very sharp edge.  The awl is a bit like a Vic Farmer,  But todays test was with the CAN OPENER.

Imperial Kamp King- 1min 19sec.

This thing was weak and slow.  I bent the tool now it doesent want to close right.

Oy.  Can steel stronger than the tool steel.

I will be leaving all results on this thread now so here is a rundown.

Day 1- Victorinox Spartan Lite(91mm w regular vic co)-43 sec

Day 2 Victorinox Scientist(combo tool)-37 sec

Day 3- Leatherman PST-22sec

Day 4- Imperial Kamp King-1m 19 sec   ???

One 13.2oz Can of Dog food is opened per day.  My 14 year old son times me right before the point of entry.  When I run out of can openers to test, I will take the top 4 for a final heat.

If we ever need to open more than a couple of cans in the furure, I will do a mini test with the top 3 or 4.

Ive used this blade on the Imperial quite a bit with no problems although the backspring seems weak.

I have never opened a can with the Imperial.  It bent the first time I used it.

I've had openers fail to open a can, but never had one actually get mangled. That's just awesome.  :tu: You know, in a terrible way.

Day 5 -  Wenger of unknown name.  When I look at sakwiki I think it is an alpineer or a backpacker.  There is a nail nick(see pic) to open the saw instead of the usual way.

It has a file, corkscrew, awl and bottle opener/large driver

Wenger ??- 32 sec

I missed the grip and jumped a section I had to backtrack.  Lost a few secs at least.

My son thinks I should omit the kitchen hand crank because it is not technically a multi-tool.  I will leave that to a vote till monday night.  Handcrank-yes or handcrank no

I'd like to see the handcrank. You can omit it from the competition, but it's time would make a good benchmark, IMHO.

Day 6 subject is a 3.99 tool tub bargan from about 2000 or so.  I keep it in the front of my commuter car mostly for the pliers.(I also keep a toolbox in the trunk)  The blade that has never been used is as dull as a butterknife.  As you can see , it has the fish scaler/ruler.

Day 6-Stainless China(printed inside the tool) Tool-  FAIL- AFter 5 minutes.

At 3 minutes the hawkbill style tool dulled and would not cut.  I was about halfway at that point. It would only make an entry mark.  So I chopped a few more areas and had to backtrack my work in a twisting motion to break the lid areas from the can.  Thats how I continued cutting until 5 min

At 5 minutes I was about 65% done but the tool felt loose and the can opener was bent.  It did not feel safe to continue considering I was using a lot of force and the tool was failing.

Good that you stopped there! It is amazing how dull a cheap tool can be until it starts eating your fingers!  :ahhh

I was anavailable at feeding time the past 2 days so my wife opened the cans.  She used the kitchen hand crank even though she has a perfectly capable Vic Tinker.

Tomorrow I will use the kitchen hand crank and time it.  Not for competition but for a time to shoot for.

Next Up for competition is a Vic OUtrider, Leatherman Sidekick, Vic waiter and a wenger Ranger 78.

From there, we will have the final 4 participants for the title

The standard kitchen can opener will get through a can in about 5 secs. Unless it's worn out.

Kitchen hand crank took the lid off in 6 seconds,  I will never be that fast with any multitool.

Here is a pic of the dog that is fed with this food.  Shuggie

The kitchen hand crank will not be entered in the competition.  It was just an exhibition to set the standard

Btw, the beast could be beaten anyway,
there has to be some handicap between such different contestants

I once threw away such a crank and opened my can with my SAK.  :tool:
(My mom gave it to my for my first appartement, must have bought it at a 1€-store. That thing looked the same but was not able to cut round a can in one go, slipped off, did not penetrate, etc...   :poh:) In the end, I am faster with my SAK. Might be that I am not used to them as I don't trust this hand cranks anymore

I have an almost identical hand crank, works really well for me.

Thing is most stuff I buy in tins has a ring pull. The value ranges and a few other things don't, but the other things are a minority in my kitchen.

Tesco Value Mushy Peas FTW (they doubled the price recently, went up from 8p a tine to 16p!)
