Actually, was meant ("overhere") at home.  :D
Nevermind, I hope you enjoyed your can  :pok:

I see that Lynn was a bit quicker than myself. As she says, it was meant as a joke, regarding your "flag". I didn't even know that the Spam-"flag" was set by default; I thought it was chosen by the user, for those paranoid types, that don't want other people to even know what country they're from.
Hope you didn't take any offense from the slight misunderstanding. :-)
And, lastly, my apologies to Luna Knife, for contributing to more off-topic. :-)

Any can should be ok   we just have to beat LM ... yes, we can  :D

Luna Knife has used something like this,
http://www.petco.com/product/15448/Pedigree-Traditional-Ground-Dinner-Dog-Food-To-132-oz-Cans.aspx
as stated:
One 13.2oz Can of Dog food is opened per day.

Hand Crank Opener (Swing-a-Way): 6.7 seconds
P-51: 27 seconds
Wave: 26 seconds
PST knockoff (sheffield): 23 seconds
Vic Tinker: 28 seconds
Juice S2: 27 seconds
SOG Powerlock: FAIL

From THIS thread...

And, of course, Vic wasn't prepared those days ...

This CLOSELY matches my experience.  You can see the dynamic rocking motion when he's running the Vic opener.

I just did a time test on a #300 can with the can opener of the old Pocket Powerplier I got recently. It has the old-style hawkbill opener, very similar to the Leatherman PST.

Time was 16.47 seconds.

It was, essentially, a 'perfect run', no rim jumps, and most of the cuts seemed to use the majority of the cutting surface of the can opener.

I'll see if I can get my hubby to record an attempt with it this evening.

And... having assumed I'd done the best time I could with that tool, I opened two more cans for dinner (cheap mini beef ravioli, don't judge me!)

The first one was about 17 seconds (my hubby apparently didn't know where the stop button was on the timer).

The second was 15.76 seconds. Caught on video.

Thats good work Lynn.  Fast time but the lid is not removed.  Nearly removed yes.

I leave the lids on intentionally, less issue in clean-up and recycling. If you feel the time is unfair, add a third of a second.

I agree here.  To me open means easy effective removal of contents, not necessarily complete detachment of lid.  IMO, leaving "the hinge" actually is a step up in skillset.

 :hatsoff:

It's mostly (for me) that I got 'bit' by a lid once while taking out the recycling, and didn't dig it.

Today's lunch was opened with a Wave, at a time of 21 seconds. That's a lot faster than my previous time with the tool, but nowhere near the time I managed with the Old Style PPP.

Next can I open, I'll go back to a vic opener, just to see what my time is like on that these days.

I don't understand how you can get those times. When I opened a can a few hours ago, with a regular can opener, it took me close to a minute. Is it years of practice or is it just the fact that I don't belong in a kitchen?

As of maybe two or so years ago, I might have been able to count the number of cans I'd opened with an MT can opener on one hand. Since then, I might have opened fifty or so, but rotate through a variety of styles of opener, so I wouldn't say I've had a lot of experience with any single opener.

I have a crank can opener (an EZ-DUZ-IT), which will open a can in about 6 seconds. Compared to it, the MTs seem kind of slow.

I don't know what the deal is with my times lately. All of them have improved, and it's not like I'm practicing a ton. So... uuuhhhmmm....

I think the winning time on ANY can opener we've seen on these boards is 15 seconds with a Vic? Someone correct me if I'm misremembering. I thought I was doing pretty well at about 16 seconds with the old-style PPP the other day.

I think the pst might be in trouble.  I just did an untimed run on a Vic Farmer that felt very fast :tool:

The 'felt fast' thing is weird, because I've had runs that I thought were blisteringly fast, and barely broke 30 seconds. I think the PPP FEELS very clumsy, but the numbers don't lie.

Because of the geometry of the Farmer, I think it is the fastest Alox model (maybe fastest SAK 8))

I haven't noticed any difference in speed from Cadet to Farmer, to Rucksack. I DO think the Spirit is slower, but I suspect that's due to the additional mass. The Rucksack, while a 111mm, is still pretty light (like 3.5oz-ish)

Maybe I should time them again, to see if there IS a difference.

Yesterday, I opened two #300 cans for dinner.

Vic Farmer: 21.66 seconds (down from about 28 seconds)
Leatherman PST II: 18.96 seconds (down from about 23 seconds)

Neither run was very smooth, and I'm pretty confident I'll end up with sub-20-second time with a vic can opener pretty soon.

Today's lunch opened by Vic Cadet

Time: 19.01 seconds

It was a very smooth run, and I don't think my time will improve greatly with a vic opener much above this, unless or until I figure out the upstroke cut. I wasn't attempting that on this run, just going at my best pace.
