The Gerber MPT#5 is an important part of Gerber and multitool history. I thought it might be good to have a club for this multitool.  Pics of the MPT, history, advertisment and stories of its use would be appreicated by all of us. I have been meaning to get a MPT, but it always gets put on the back burner. Hopefully soon though.

Unless photos are mandatory I guess I should join this club.  I have 5, a mix of old and new handles, SS and BO finish.

Yes.  I have the following:
(the two digit Id is my unique Id for each tool, necessary for my old brain to keep track once I started to collect a lot of tools)

2a  BO old handles (shoulders), old awl
7c  SS old handles, old awl
1j   SS new handles (speed bumps, no shoulders), old awl  [I think this MPT may be a transitional version ? ]
7g  SS new handles, new awl
7t  BO new handles, new awl

Other differences I noticed:

2a and 7c have the brushed stainless finish on the plier jaws
1j, 7g and 7t have the polished matte finish on the plier jaws

2a, 7c and 1j have the "5 blades" tool load with a lanyard attachment and a large screwdriver
7g and 7t have the "3 blades" tool load with just a spacer

2a and 7c have two-sided Simonds USA files
1j, 7g and 7t have three-sided Simonds USA files

2a and 7c have hex head plier pivot screws
1j, 7g and 7t have round head plier pivot screws

2a and 7c have the long stamped-out reliefs for the blade backsprings
1j has the long milled-out reliefs for the blade backsprings
7g and 7t have the short stamped-out reliefs for the blade backsprings


Anything I've missed ?

1j looks very similar to this tool on ebay:

The MPT is a neat piece of multitool history.  I'll get a pic of mine up tomorrow,

Got an interesting MPT coming. From the pics it appears to be new handles but still has hex bolts on the plier pivots. As Gerber was making changes and using with old parts it led to some intersting combo's.   :)

It does sound like another "transitional" version. It will be interesting to find out which mix of early and late components it has when you get it.   :tu:

I think Leatherman did much the same with their PST, using up handles and components as they moved to newer versions.

My entry to the club.  :)






I believe this is an older one.  Shoulders, old awl, hex bolts on all pivot points.  It's a neat tool for sure, and actually the very first tool I acquired specifically to have one in the collection rather than for use in the rotation.  It's been carried though, in keeping with my "no shelf queen" policy.

Some of my MPTs are quite stiff, some are loose (the ones that have been used a lot).
The awl catches on the pliers and the tool is stiff.

Reminds me of mr. pinchy tools on a PST like body, but longer.

Reminds me of mr. pinchy tools on a PST like body, but longer.

IIRC Gerber created the MPT to compete with LM's PST for military supply contracts (and won at least one contract), so that explains the similarity.

The military surplus store just down the road from me has four MPTs NIB. I've been tempted so many times to snatch them all up. Must stay away from the Gerber page :facepalm: it could get a bit pricey for me.
