Show off your beater SAKs.
on: February 26, 2014, 10:17:08 PM
Enough with the shelf queens and limited editions. What gets used? I mean really used.
What gets dragged through the dirt. What has a broken something or other, missing scales. Yet is still in use.

Whats scratched, bent, ugly, half broke, over worked, and you wouldn't have it any other way?..

Some mod guinea pigs. (acid bad...) I now use them for odd task. The 58mm's blade is my go to scale remover; works great, plus l'll also use it as a scrapper. Added scales at one time but liked it better without for some odd reason.

The 91mm was suppose to be a gift but I didn't like the wear on the finish so opted to gift something else. Now its my go to package opener, minor pryer, and garden knife. Put on old celliodor Eco scales. Thought they were quite fitting. Wish they were black and without the TP&T cut out though.

I have my champ plus that I got in a trade with aloha that gets abused every single day. Still looks pretty good, though. I'll get a pic later after work.

I rotate to much to be able to say I have a beater, and I am not that hard on my tools anymore as I used to be. I think I only ever had one beater SAK, back when I had only 1, maybe 20 years ago. I still have it, but I never use it anymore. I don't like the color.

I use both of these quite often. The Wenger stays on my desk and gets used for all the dirty, sticky cutting tasks. The Fisherman lives in my tackle box and gets a whole lot of use.  :tu:

I have quite a few pioneers that I picked up here and there that are well past the point of being abused. They are almost worn away. One farmer became a pioneer that is very close to being a bottle opener!

That's funny...

This one was not beaten up by me - But has taken a serious beating in its past.

These are three of my beaters. All of them are FrankenSAKs to some extent.
The first is a mixture of Vic and Wenger tools in a 91mm Vic chassis.
The second is a single layer Wenger built from my parts box.
and the third is a 91mm backspring and opener with a Florist knife blade in modified 93mm Alox scales.

a couple more shots of the hybrid

I've misplaced my #1 beater but I'm building a replacement.
I had lots of leftover Wenger parts from the mods I did shoehorning Wenger scissors into 84mm Vic's and one of the combinations I came up with was this one.
It is a common mod to use a Vic' Alox Solo backspring to fit scissors into a Pioneer or a Farmer, well, this is the opposite, using a scissor spring to make a Wenger 85mm Solo.
This pic shows early in the process before the blade tang is reshaped to make the blade sit correctly in the closed position. But a little filing and a careful re-tensioning of the spring and it works like a bought one.
This blade has been heavily sharpened but I have 4 more blades and springs and plan to (eventually) build four Solo's with brass liners and bolsters and nice wood scales.

The original SuperTool has been beaten up more, but these two Climbers also reside in the junk drawer.

@Romanoat glad to hear you are using the Champ Plus  :tu:

I have a Swisschamp with a recently broken now missing plier spring, scratched up scales and main blade, and well used scissors.  This is really my go to SAK, we'll see in a few months how my Deluxe tinker looks since I'm using it as my work blade.

I'll post up pics late today.

Thanks for starting this thread Fatts, love to see working SAK's.  :tu:

Here's my Trailmaster Nero after 9 months, a little scratched and some scale wear, but still working perfectly. Sharpened a few times now, made the end of the serrated blade a little pointier for those stabby ops, and filed the edge of the scale near the phillips a little for smoother exit from the pouch. The one hand feature works better now than when new, even with gloves, and the knife remains tight and snappy like new. Beater?, yes; but beaten?, NO!  :D

Found my #1 beater  Wenger Solo.  In the bottom of the washing machine... I should know to look there.

this one is cool because it has a pair of "no back-tools" scales from a picnic or apprentice (or something) so there is no awl or corkscrew cutout.

It usually lives on my workbench and does a lot of my scale removing tasks.

@Twiliter, It's about time the working SAK got attention for all they do for us. Tired of "Collectibles" being displayed or shelved.
If it hasn't been used it's got no character, no personality...No soul.

Just sharpened the small blade and put a neck lanyard on my 91mm beater. Makes carrying it around doing yard work so much easier, and even around the house. Just cause. :D I use to wear SAKs as pendents back in the day, guess I kind of miss it.

@everyone else, nice! :tu: :salute:
Keep'em working.

Here's a couple of before and after pics of my beater Vic. Found it in the TSA confiscation bin the other week, broken main blade, small blade, scissors and corkscrew, all got fettled or replaced with modern parts to make it into a serviceable knife. I turned the small blade stub into a flat Phillips driver, reprofiled the main blade successfully, corkscrew is a new Wenger part, scissors are modern Vic's riding on the modified "old" saw backspring.

@snieder, does your beater still get used?

I beautified my beater a little.
Was tired of the red, and couldn't afford new scales and didn't feel like asking around so a few coats of flat black, and voila!

Sorry for the poor pic, Iphone camera is not on par with my Windows phone I normally use.
